Default ABS INOP/LOW TRAC Braking problem

I have a 95 Firebird Formula. Recently I've been having a brake problem. When slowing down, whether a normal or a panic stop, when the speed gets down to about 15 MPH the LOW TRAC light comes on and the brakes quit stopping. I do finally get stopped but at a longer distance than should be. Sometimes when the engine is cranked the ABS INOP light comes on and stays on. When this happens I don't have the braking problem and the LOW TRAC light does not come on. I thinik it may be a sensor or a loose connection. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where to start looking. Thanks.

does it feel like they let go then grab againmaking the car rock from side to side and when this happens the abs light comes on right butr if you cut the car off and leave it then when you crank it ts not on right if so you may want to check your front hubs the abs sensors my be bad that s what happened to mine and the local shop couldn`t find it with the machine i had to go to the dealer and let them diagnosis it becauce they could pull up codes the local shop couldn`t but the good news you can get a replacement hubs a advance for about 125 let me know what you find out and if your close i can change it out for you

Thanks for replying redhot lt-1. My car doesn't rock side to side. It goes straight. If you've ever hit the brakes on ice, it is similar to that just not quite as bad. I can feel the brake pedal push back up slightly. I'm not sure if all 4 calipers are letting go or if only 2. Since it slows down straight I'm assuming that the problem is not just one caliper. I'm going to take your advice and check out the front wheel sensors first. Thanks

sorry the ice thing is what i meant it feels like one of the wheels is hitting an ice patch but it will stop the car i think you need to take it to the dealer have them diagnosis it it may cost you $70.00 (thats what i was charged at my local dealer) and if it is the hub sensor its simple to replace if it is the calibers you will be able to find out when you have it diagnosised i`m sorry if it sounds like i`m talking in circles but i`ve had this problem 3 months ago drop me a line if i can help and if you live near sumter sc let me know i`ll be more than happy to help you do the work. PS you may have trouble with the abs pump to

Its not a sensor, its the the brakes them selves. There sticking and getting hot, because of worn parts. redhot lt-1...end those sentences buddy

Haha i hear ya. Well just have them pull the brakes apart and put them back together. Should give ya an extra thousand miles or so, if not more.

Try cleaning the magnets on the rear caliper brackets. There should be a finger off the bracket and sometimes that can be filled with dirt between the magnet and the cog looking piece pressed on the axle.

Thanks for all the replies. The problem has mysteriously gone away by itself for the last few days but the brake pedal feels 'funny' like the pads are worn out. I checked the calipers and the pads are very thin. I'm going to change them this weekend. I'll check for dirt and crud on the magnets and sensors.
