My wild guess: you've got an automatic and you can't get it into Park far enough for whatever is supposed to happen then to happen. Wiggle the stick. Good luck.

Right. Isn't there a mechanical link between the tranny/shifter and the column that allows the key to turn when the tranny is in park, but not when it's not? I'm guessing that's out of kilter some how. Again, good luck.

Sounds like maybe the ingnition switch on top the dash is shot and you cant pull the key back because its froze and the rod is stuck.

There's a cable that runs from the shifter to the ignition switch(down at steering column), at the shifter it has a solenoid that allows shifting lever to move up and down on console when brake pedal is pressed. Now, at the same time brake pedal is pressed, it gives the key cylinder ease of movement through a lever/rod that runs internally on the steering column, this lever/rod moves forward as the key moves to the ON position. Same lever/rod moves your ignition switch(I mean the electrical part at bottom of steering column) sounds like it got stocked there at the switch... It did that to me except I got to turn off my car forcing the key towards me, and then couldn't get the key out, after messing around with the cylinder... key wouldn't even move forward enough on the ignition switch to start the car.... Replaced ignition switch and problem solved... bypassed VATS aslo while I was at it...
