Question Help with camaro purchase

Ok...I dont know where this question should go. Sorry if wrong!
I dont know a lot or really anything when it comes to motors or anything. More of a body man.
I am thinking about purchasing a Camaro.
I dont know which Gen to get.
I like the Gen2(93 model right?) more than Gen3(last model correct?)
But I dont know what motor to look for.
I dont want to take it to the drag strip. Not much of a racer.
But I want something for just around town that shows *****.
My buddy got a 93 LT1 auto and I would like to get one that can kick his *** as well!
Please help me out guys!

^^^ thats not right. GM gave several different ratings based on year. For instance in 1993 they said it had 280HP and in '94 GM said 275HP and then in 1997 they changed it to 285HP. The same with the LS!, it cahnged a lot but never more than 5HP. So generally speaking

Camaro LT1 - 280HP
Camaro LS1 - 310HP

In my opinon the LS1 number are severly underrated. Most stock LS1's dyno around 300 at the wheels.

Heres a link to the B4C catalog and you can see the HP rating in there.

Obviously dont go anything less than an LT1. But if you can find the green to do so, buy an LS1. I am VERY happy with my LT1, Lots of torque, fun on the street, but as someone else stated. LS1s...as hyped as they are, are under-rated if you ask me. With very little effort they are monsters. I think you would be quite happy with either one. You should probably pick more on the body style you want than anything, especially since racing is not in the plans.

Personally, I would look for a '98 & up LS1 car. I have both as street cars, and the LS1 is certainly faster in stock form. Great gas mileage, etc. I love my '98 WS6 convert. I race an LT1, but that is just an oil leak repair that got kinda out of hand.

Good luck, Ed

if you like the '93 - '97 body styles then i'd say choose one of them. i recommend choosing either a '96 or '97, for the LT1 has an HP rating of 285 from the factory. the LT1's got plenty of ***** for casual driving. the '98+ models come equipped with the LS1, which has an SAE rating of 310, but is significantly underrated (due to taxation and surcharges). the LS1 definitely hits hard through the top end (as opposed to the LT1, which has buckets of low-end torque). however, the LS1 models are obiously more expensive than LT1 models. there are many variables, but i just stated a few key points. good luck with your purchase, and come back to let us know the decision you make!!!
