Default Cam Choices

I have a 97 Formula that just blew a head gasket and I am gonna do a cam swap I was just wondering what you guys recommend I dont have to pass any emissions right now I have the mods in sig and also will be needing roller rockers and valve springs and I will be getting mid length headers soon as well. I was going to originally get the hotcam kit but they are on back order til who knows when. I would like something comprable to that but with more power since I am going this route anyway. Thanks for help

Whic cam to get depends on how much money you want to spend. The Comp Cams 305 cam is a good for for the mods you got (in my opinoin. But, since this cam requires bigger valve springs you will need to send the heads off to a machine shop and have the heads cut to fit the new valve springs. That would probably be a couple hundred bucks down here in Houston to do that job. If it were me since i would send the heads to the machine shop why not put bigger valves and get some port work done since they are there already. The HotCam kit is a good kit and springs can easily be swapped with no machine work done. Just my $0.02

I was considering the 305 cam but decided to go bigger. I am now running an xe-224/236 on a 114lsa. It sounds great at idle, I would consider it to be a choppy cam. You will have to upgrade the spring to the double coiled type. I went with the comp 987 springs that either have the heads machined for the larger springs or you can do like i did and call up nu-tek motorsports and have them notch you the springs seats to fit the stock heads. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

I just called cmotorsports and got the comp xe 224/230 grind with 112 LSA, double coil springs that fit stock heads, timing chain,1.6 rrs, hardened pushrods retainers and locks and 3 day shipping for 640.00 I think thats a pretty damn good deal.

just the lt4 not the heavy duty or anything but still thats a pretty good deal oh yeah and they also gave me dual coil springs that do not need any head modification whatsoever and they said that alot of companies and/or people just arent aware that they exist and that they are jut about as strong as the wider ones.

MeanLT1-I'm running that same 224/236 cam. With my GMHPP 1.6 rockers it comes out to be;
224/236 .537/.556 112 Xtreme
In my 3,650lb race day weight and 3 lbs of N2O in the 10lb bottle, On motor only it gets high 11's.
With the hundred shot, 11.1 @ 121 mph.
This is a cam designed for Nitrous and is therefore not optimized for normally aspirated. I think it does an outstanding job at both though.
This same cam was in Denny Mclains and Mike Grahams motors before I bought it from Mike.
