The Best V8 Stories One Small Block at Time
Anyway, I E-mailed this to ROBS SS already but I figured I would post it as well and see if I can get a few more educated opinions. I am in a debate with a Mustang guy about the cost of building an LT1 to a 302 Ford. He says that it would be cheaper to build a 302 Mustang into the low 10's than an LT1 F-body. He also said that the 4 bolt LT1's are weak and that a friend of his broke his mains. I've got a friend with a 94 Vette all N/A that runs 11.9's @ 117 on a stock bottom end with over 30K on the build up. It's just now starting to burn a little oil. Anyway, here's a few quotes from him.
"I have yet to run into any LT1 owner who has only spent 10K to get into the
low 10's."
"Regardless you cannot build a LT1 car to handle low 10's for 10K whereas you can on a 302 car where the rotating assy. is forged in which A. would be faster than your supposed H/C/I/E LT1 car on a shot and B. would be much more reliable than your H/C/I/E on a shot w/ the LT1 rotating assy. being stock I challenge you to find one where you can."
"you have only provided a link to where you say it's impossible to build a Ford motor yet have supplied nothing to back up where a LT1 car can be built for 10K to handle low 10's."
Sorry for the long post but this guy is really down on the LT1's. I am an LS1 guy now but I have owned an LT1 and 2 5.0's and honestly, I think the LT1's can be made faster and for less money than either of the other two. I would appreciate any and all feedback you guys can add to this.
Thanks.
I also know there is a guy with a 355 buildup(rods pistons just like mine) running a stock crank in an auto car on the jug that has gone 9.5s. I forget his name but he is from the bowling green KY. area.
Oh..I also have stock crank and 2 bolt mains ...just good bolts in those mains.

Cool, thanks for the info. You've essentially done a 10 second buildup for about $8200 (~$500 for a good shot of N20?) on 2 bolt mains. This is right in the ballpark of my argument. I am doubting that even with the extra $1800 he could get a 302 into the low 10's. Actually, I did tell him that with enough nitrous, it WOULD run low 10's.... for about 2 or 3 runs. But again it was all about how the 302 would last and the LT1 wouldn't. And how the LT1 would cost more to build. And how the mains in an LT1 (Yes, even the Vette's 4 bolt) are weak and wouldn't last.
He posted this on a Mustang board (with the usual Chevy name calling, etc.) and they all gave him turbo buildups and nitrous fed strokers. One guy even told him that if he stays with fuel injection it would be wayyyy over $10K. Anyway, thanks again for the info. Hope you don't mind if I quote you or link to this thread.
