uncoated headers
i bought a set of Pacesetter LT headers with emission fittings. the only problem is they are not coated. do you think i should put them in like that or can i get them ceramic coated somewhere for a good price? my car is a 94Z A4. how much does ceramic coating usually run?

I would get them coated by someone, one of our sponsers does it. I have uncoated and its ok, but i like to look the coating gets you, and everything stays cooler. I didnt because i heard they burn up o2 sensors, untill they cure, but looking back i would just run the car for a while in forced open loop with the o2 sensors out. untill they heat cycled.

I just ordered the uncoated pacesetter's for my car. I have had six sets of regular headers in the past, mostly from Hedman and Hooker. I have never had any durability issues, and don`t really care what the finish looks like. Unless it adds power, I won't spend an extra dime for pretty stuff under the hood. I would be interested in some real world heat comparisons, as any tubular headers do add a lot of underhood heat. I would also be interested in knowing what are the perceived benefits of the heat reduction, because I have never had any heat related issues.

The coating keeps more of the exhaust heat inside the header tube causing it to exit faster. I don't have documention on the gains, but have read it a number of times from sources that had no monetary interest in the coating.

since youve already got them uncoated dont worry about it. heat is an issue if youre looking for drag racing. the heats that going to build from the staging lanes to the end of the track isnt that much. if anything just get header wrap and go that route. sure it doesnt look shiny like the coating but youll get the desired result.

I have hooker uncoated headers on my car. I striped of the black paint that they came with, and coated them with flat black VHT header paint. Works great. Headers have been on the car for 2 years and have zero rust. My car is not my daily driver though, the headers have only seen rain once or twice.
