somewhere in the 2800-3200 area works good with a stock cam, provided you have a corrected tune in the pcm.

it would need some tweaking to drive nicely. shift points would need to be upped on light throttle.

there is no tuning needed for a converter. the one that u wil buy for ur car will be a "lockup" converter. so u will have no issues.
and like someone already suggested a 2800-3200 is plenty

at least a 3000 up to a 3800 Vigilante.
tuning should not be a problem but some times they act goofy....they being the whole car, nothing major....

transgo shift kit would be a good idea, if there is still time for that.
also what brand of converter are u buying? i would recommend fuddle, precision industries, or yank.
bang for the buck, go with fuddle.
if u want to get what u pay for, go with YANK.

also, with a converter your street tires are not going to like it. u will need to look into some drag radials.

well for the torque converter i was thinking some custom shop i could get a deal on maybe but i am not sure cause i could get one from them for like 200 -250 compared to 500 or more

as for drag radials i will look into them but i am only 17 and planning to work on airplanes in the next few years adn this winter i am going to install a ultra z hood and repaint it like a show car so just slightly modding it now

$200-250 is going to be a 12" NOT what you want and not comparable to the 9.5" converters. Go over 2400-2500 on a 12" and fluid starts getting really hot because it is very inefficient.
Edge is my pick for converters but would also recommend Yank and Vig.

don't wanna be cheap with a converter. It will be expensive in the long run

AMEN.. if you can't afford to get the RIGHT converter... dont get one at all... spend your money other places... like gears... slicks... LT's...

Just a bad idea to run a cheap converter... you wont gain what you should, and its only a matter of time before it costs you some bloody knuckles and more money....

I just had my tranny built with all the good stuff. Plus i got a 3000 stall converter. Car drives like stock until you get on it. I haven't found any dead spots anywhere in the rpm range. As soon as you start pushing the pedal down the car starts hauling. Without a good sticky radial or a slick dont expect to get any type of traction when launcing at full throttle. Tranny and converters are definitely something you will spend a lot of money on but you will definitely get your money's worth if the job is done right.

exactly.
a cheap convertor will likely balloon. when it does,it will send metal through the rest of the trans, then its time for a rebuild......not cheap.

if he has no shift kit or increased line pressure,it will shift very soft.
also stock shift timing at light throttle makes the shift fell mushy/non-existant. I prefer a shift that you still know is there. There is no sense in laboring the convertor and building heat with the low shift tables.

the word cheap is being thrown around alot. most of the tranny shops definitely wont charge you $900 for a torque converter. Yank & Vig do. Sure those work awesome. However alot of the cars at the racetrack that are running 10s or better have trannies and converters built by local shops that work awesome as well. plus the local shops won't charge you 900 for a converter or at least not the ones i was recommended.

remember just because yank and vig have a nice website and are sponsors doesn't mean everyone else is shitty. i went to a shop that was highly recommended by guys who use their product in several 9 and 8 second cars. they also do transmissions and converters for alot of IHRA racers. they have a 3-5 year (forgot how long it actually is) transmission warranty and a 2 year warranty on their converter. so dont go thinking that a converter that is less than $900 is not worthy. Go to the fast cars at the track and ask them who did their work and you might be surprised at the who did the work and the prices they charge for proven products compared to these other well known companies.

so just make sure you go to a place with a good reputation. Yank and Vig have that established on a much larger scale than these local shops but that doesn't mean that the local shops are ****. and remeber someone will always have a horror story about a company no matter who the company is.

All this tlk about heat and no one has mention the fact that hill will need to add a tranny cooler to keep excess tranny temps at bay.
