Default Port-Matching Heads and Intake

Anyone know what kind of gain you will get from this. I am talking about a good job with it also, not the half-*** job that I am sure some of us have seen. I am still in the process of smoothing and polishing mine, I just did it. All Ports match the Intake Gasket, and they all are opened up real deep and straight.
This is a rough-cut shot of one done, and one not done. Most of us know what the Intake looks like, I Ported that out also, and got it squared up nicely to the Gasket.

The gains can be pretty substantial, according to Jim at Speed Inc:

That's my next mod...

I am smoothing them out today, and that is going pretty well. I am also smoothing out the Exhaust as well. Looks like I just saved a bunch of $$..

What are you useing to do this, a dremel? I'm getting ready to do a cam swap and I have ported and polished heads, so matching the intake to the heads sounds like a good move. Anyone got any results from this?

Thanks, I realize I shouldn't make it to smooth, but grinding down the ports to match the head ports seems like it would flow better.

I took alot of metal out.. I used a friends bench Dremel with a Burr to cut Aluminum. It took like 6 hours. I finished my Intake earlier. I smoothed the bottom of it, but the top is still rough.

A port matchined intake is absolutely everthing to getting the best out of your heads. If you don't match the intake, your not even lining the head ports up with the intake. Its a contradiction to the entire idea of porting the heads, because the smaller intake ports become an obstruction to the larger head ports.

Can you provide more info/pics on how you did this to the intake. Maybe a step by step breakdown. I have a hand held dremel and drill. My new cam will arrive on Monday, so when the intake comes off to do the install, that will be a good time to port the intake. My heads are already P/P, I just want to match the intake to it.

Take the Intake Gasket and line it up on the Intake Ports where it would go when it is on the Car. If the Heads are done right, they are matched to the Gasket also. When you line that up on the Intake, take a marker and color the area that is showing. Take the Gasket off and you will see the overlap. That is what you want to take out. You cut it out, and taper the cut into the Intake Port. Eventually it will level off. Then you sand down the excessively rough areas. You want to leave some of it rough.

I would still smooth that down so it's nice and flat. I am smoothing my Exhaust ports as well.

What size cutting bit did you use and about how long did it take to do the intake? What grit sandpaper?

I just used one of the Cutting Burrs. It took about 5 or 6 hours. I sanded it after with 150 grit.

Yeah this is the one regreat I have, i was down 6 months and waited forever to get my intake and then would had to wait possibly a month or so more so my intake was never ported! So one day i'll take it off or buy another and get it done. I've been advised It's robbing me of power, been qouted 15-20 at the wheels!

DAH, I don't know what the heck I've been thinking. I just bought an air compressor a week ago. I can buy a die grinder and use that. That should make it a lot easier.

There you go.. that's what most of the Mahine Shops use. I am proud of mine cause I did them myself, eventhough it took a while. Nothing beats free HP's.
