Default Running Rich

This is what I got. I figure it to be running really rich, and the Timing is retarded, cause it is back-firing. If I floor it while it cranks, it wants to start. That means that the TPS is all the way open, and it wants to run with all that Fuel.
I am going to change out the Coolant Temp. Sensor on the Water Pump, someone said that it might be a factor of why it's rich. I am also going to un-plug the MAF Sensor to set it into default mode.
Another thing I am going to try to get the Timing advanced is to un-plug the Knock Sensor, since it retards the Engine when it feels anything. I am backfiring, so the Timing is really retarded. Since the Computer is in a learning mode cause it has been un-plugged for so long, this may help it cause the signaly everything sends may be accepted at a wider range. Then once it gets going, I will plug everything in and see what it does.
Anyone have any inputs..

Got spark on all 8 Cylinders. It's definately Fuel mixture, and Timing being retarded.

Gonna need to get it on a logging scanner and then do some tuning with like LT1-EDIT.

We already have it fully tuned for the Hotcam. I think it just has to get used to the new Motor, so unplugging some of them things might help it.

Had the same Headers on the old Motor. The only thing different is that this one has new Rods, Pistons, Crank, Bearings and Block. Everything else is off of the old Engine. I am going to change out the Coolant Temp. Sensor on the Water Pump. That might be a factor, and I have an extra new one that has no use.

I am not thinking Timing anymore, I think it's just rich. It wants to go at wide-open Throttle. A few Cylinders fire when the Gas is to the floor.

Two things I can think of that would cause those symptoms is incorrectly installed opti and valves not set right.

I agree that a scanner here would be of great use. That's how I discovered my coolant temp sensor was bad.

yes, curious as to what it was? I'm putting in a different rebuilt motor next weekend and would be nice to know if I run into something similar.

We had the Valves adjusted with too much pre-load. I backed them all off until they were loose, then turned the Pushrod until I got a little resistance, then went 1/10 turn on all. I did that so when it starts running and they get pumped up, they will be in posistion. It runs nicely.
