Default richmond gear broke.

i have a 4.56 geared '97 t/a. a number of bolt ons and the loudmouth exhuast. good for a 13.5 with ok traction. well had a nasty noise and vibration develop from the rear. i pulled the cover to find my pinion chunked. i was planning to yank the gear set due to a bad install from the last guy who owned it anyway. but this sucks. anyone else have issues with richmond gear sets? i know the rear wasn't set right, but i don't think that would cause the pinion to puke its gears. anyone?

When you say "OK traction" would that have inclusded some wheelhop????? That is about the fastest way to frag a gearset. 4.56s have a small pinion which will be weaker than something like 3.23s as well.

well since you stated that they were incorrectly installed in the fist place that doesnt help things. i dont have richmond, but have been told that there one of the weaker gear sets especially since u have 4:56's. try motive this time, and get a reputable guy who can install gears.

2 sets of Richmond 4.10's and I am now running Motive 4.56 gears. The higher you go numercially the less realiable they will be due to the smaller tooth size. I got my Motive gears for around $165.00 on ebay. I was more than satisfied that they lasted the rest of the summer. Very quiet and much better quality cut in the root of the tooth. As mentioned above it doesn't really matter what gear you run if they were not set up right in the first place they will not last long and wheel hop will destroy any piece of the rear end and you can add a multiplier to that if you start running drag radials.

Summit has Motives for about $165 last I checked they are what I am running though I am lucky and have a 8.5" axle which is bulletproof compared to the glass 7.5".

I like richmonds better, higher nickel content = stronger. I have richmond 3.73's and love them.

You know AAM(American Axle and Machine) gears can be had for like $175, they are GMs supplier so these are OEM gears without the OEM markup.

I have some richmond 4.10s that are hopefully going in this week, I'm hoping I won't have any issues.
