Default Problem at the Strip

Here is my setup- 95 Z28, A4, 2.73's, CAI, Catback, LCA's, PHB

When i went to the track to run it, I staged put the car in drive. After i launched and got to 3rd gear the rev limiter kicked in. I ran a 14.3. Should I be running out of gear with 2.73's in third gear??? The next past I put it in OD for the hell of it. At the top end the car went into to OD before trapping. That pass was a 14.1 at 98mph. I had a 2.0 60ft Is this normal for me to run out of gear in third like that?

Thanks
Bryan

Well using this gear calculator and aSSuming you have stock tires, you may be shifting out of 2nd and into 3rd, not fourth...

Why do you switch between the gear selections? Doesnt your car just have 1, 2, 3, D? Just leave it in drive n go.
But with a 2.73 rear gear i dont think you should be running out of gear. I know with a 3.23 rear gear 80 is top of 2nd and 100 is mid 3rd somewhere.

The PCM can shift your A4 better then you can manually, RedsTA is right, just put it in drive and go. Also, look into getting a shift kit, it will frim up your shifts and lower you times.

You also get more pressure to the 3-4 clutches leaving it in OD(or manually shifting) than you do in leaving it in D. If I had to guess from my computer desk I would say 3-4 clutch pack on the way out which is the most common failure for this tranny. In the future leave it in OD and let it do the shifting.

I did put it in drive the first time. The overdrive the second time. I DID NOT manually shift it at all. 3rd gear is drive.

What were your trap speeds?
IIRC, the selection of first gear depends on the year, although I removed the plastic tab and I can get first gear, even though the console does not have the number on it.

If the car came with 3.23 you could select 1st gear. I trapped at 98mph

While I understand your answer, I suspect that the selection of first gear was year dependent. I was unable to find a console plate that would allow me to show first gear. I reserve the option to be incorrect.

OTOH, it is kind of kool to be able to shift down to first when no one knows that I have it available.

My 97 WS6 had a 4L60E tranny with 3.23 rear gears. My shift selector console was set up as P,R,D,3,2,1. My car would come out of 3rd at 120 mph.
