what to look for? hey guys well i just earned about 4000 dollars to put towards a car and was looking for either a v6 ls1 body style firebird or camaro, or a lt1 camaro z28. now can someone tell me what i should look for when i go to shop for the z28, i really want the power of a v8 so if there is anything especially important to watch out for any advice is good, thanks

I'm opposed to getting a V6 camaro, firebird, or even mustang. If you must go with the LT1, you should be weary of the optispark distributor and oil leaks coming from the rear of the engine. The Opti and the LT1's ONE coil are doomed to fail in these cars so, find out if it has been replaced already and if not, expect it to go out sooner or later in the higher milage cars. As for the oil leaks, Mine has been alright but, supposedly the rear main seal is prone to leak and also, the intake manifold seal in the back can start leaking from the heat generated by the EGR tube.
I guess you like the ls1 body style but don't care about performance, if you go V6? An lt1 z28 will be hella better than any f-body v6.
Make sure the rear end isn't broken or acting weird. That would automatically be a huge chunk of change to replace. And this is hard to do if you never been in one, but make sure it's as fast as its suppose to be. I went to look at a z28 when I was searching and it felt like my brothers integra. Something was really fucked up.

You can't see the opti problems but you can feel it....just make sure you open it up and make sure it performs well in upper rpm's too....also make sure the tranny shifts good under load, 1-2nd shift should feel kinda firm in ^^ rpm's...check for leaks/knocks ect.. ya know the usual
I always make sure it has oil & tranny fluid in it....you'd be surprised, I ran across a couple that were bone dry when I was looking for mine....I dont want that **** LOL
