Yea you can, you need the little do-hicky that plugs into the spark plug hole and keeps air in there from your air compressor

Bring each cylinder to TDC as you work and the valves only drop a short distance. Pulling the heads to do this would be like pulling the engine to change the oil.

Far as the springs killing lifters, I would suspect missadjustment on your end, the stock lifters are pretty good and most replacements are the same as the stockers. Go and screw with springs when they are supposed to match the cam and you might endup with MUCH bigger problems.

I 2nd what 96caprice said. I have changed springs using this method. Much easier than pulling the heads.

Its not that hard to change the valve springs while the heads are on the car, it took me about an hour to change all of mine and all i did was hook up the air compressor to each cylinder via the spark plug hole, I dont know if you live by a harbor freight tool store, if you dont, go online to harborfreight.com and order part number 92697-2VGA its a compression tester that will hook up to your air compressor via a quick disconnect. its normally a $10 kit which is on sale now for $4.99! this is the same kit i used on my 95 LT1 its a little tricky and takes some time to get the tester in each spark plug hole, but it can be done! just take your time to make sure its in there all the way, and its not cross-threaded. Hook it up, make sure your air compressor is plugged in so as the pressure drops it will pick up the slack. Dont forget while your in there to change your valve seals, you'll need to take them off anyway to get the bottom spring retainers out. Hope This helps ya! PS i turned my motor to TDC for the first couple of springs, but the rest i didn't the compressor held them up fine, you'll notice when your compressing the spring if the valve isnt holding up enough.

the springs where tested and are fine for the cam but he didnt know it was a hydro roller they are fine for a solid but they are overkill in my app.. we'v lashed and reset this thing a million times.. all 3 lifters failed at once to concluding that it must be the springs i imagine a few more miles poof they are all dead this is a new engine with 600 miles...

i got the heads with these springs we didnt get them with a cam

I agree with the above quote on using TDC for spring change. It kinda makes you question what the hell your mechanic is thinking, not knowing this.

its collapsing the lifters.. 3 finally started to go if i drive it more it will just kill the rest my mechanic knows the air method works just if we can fit the air hose in there.. ill tell him the TDC method i assume that means top dead center

if your mechanic did not know a LT1 was a hydraulic roller you need to find a new mechanic.
