pinion gear question

installing my new gears with a friend of mine and when i was at school he took the pinion gear out he used a hammer and smashed the first two threads on the end of the pinion gear together how can i fix this do i need to use a thread chaser or what do i need to do

You can use a tread file or a triangle file(60 degree angles are the same as most treads). With a tread file you have to find out how many threads per inch and match it up.

As for the question you can either file it or bet a tap and die set and rethread it to the right thread pattern.
