Default A quick and easy question for you LT1 guys

I have heard time and time again that people's "Opti's" are failing. What exactly is an "Opti"? I just know they were LTx problems only, and apparently I am glad that my car doesn't have it.

Optispark. Its our spark distributor. The main problem is if it gets wet, it can fail, and placed behind the water pump, it sometimes gets wet.

And you are correct, LSx engines have individual coil packs iirc?

The actual opti spark is 2 mechanisms in one. There is the sensor part which consists of a disc with slits in it that is attached to the cam and measures the position of the cam, the other part is the distributor that sits in front of the opti sensor.

opti's get oil on them alot too and fail.

Yes, we are coil on plug ignition in the LS1's. Thanks for clearing that Opti mystery up with me.

Correct, its a camshaft position sensor and a distributor in one. Like they said it likes to get oil in it and the BRILLIANT GM engineers put it underneath a waterpump that likes to fail and weep through the weep hole onto it But alas, MSD has saved us(for those who can afford it). I went through 5 Opti's before having no problems with my MSD.

The optical distributor is actually a good design, its just in the wrong spot. I had 165,000 miles on mine before I put another rotor on it.

Yea, I have to replace my Water Pump, and I think that is what causes my sputtering at 5500+rpms. I am going to make a little shield for it out of aluminum flashing.

Depends, if its a GM Opti it could be 500+ or if you know where to get it ive gotten them for high 200's. There are aftermarket ones from Summit to MSD,

The rotor on the stock opti isn't anything to brag about as well. They have a tendency to 'pop' apart.
