Default Whats the best clutch for a worked LT4

My brother has a 1996 Vette with a LT4, after he did headers, cam and ECM tuning he has found it runs mid 12's, he also found his stock LT4 clutch isnt holding, teh car only has 16k on the clock and he is leary of putting anything too exotic, or noisy, or crappy in it, any suggestions for a better clutch than stock yet maintaining a stock pedal feel and drivability with no chattering, Im looking into a christmass present for him if the price is right

I run a Ram powergrip and with over 9k miles on my h/c/bolton lt1 it still holds very well but definitely does not feel like a stockish clutch. From my experiences with my Ram powergrip and my friends Spec stage 3, Rams have a much harder pedal compared to Specs which are quite soft. Hope this helps.

I had a Centerforce Dual friction prior to my spec clutch and it had a very smooth engagement and stockish feel. It was a stock LT1 though... Not sure how they hold up under serious power.

My single disk mcleod was holding 500rwhp no problem, but it has some chatter on takeoff, not bad though but it definatly doesn't feel like my lt4 clutch did.

How well has the stock clutch held up? I am running a cam headers LT1 which i hope to also be in the mid 12's and cant afford a clutch this second, im hoping it will last about a month, did it go out right away or did you have some track passes on it? My replacement will be the RAM more then likely, they have 4 options, replacement, 40% over stock, 80% over stock, and then the mac daddy one which is like 900+ ft/lb, im going with the 80%, my friend with a LT4 Hot Cam car went with that clutch and i really like the way it feels, I just hope i can get a few miles on the clutch in it now.

it ran a 12.49 @ 113 best with a 1.77 60' but it hooks alot better than my camaro with his like 335's or whatever corvettes have in the rear as tires, their pretty wide, most of the passes have been 12.60's with mid 1.8 60'... seems as if its getting worse and some of the later runs the peddal wasnt coming up all the way until he got off it and back on, it smeels like clutch when he gets back to the pits, i figured if I can find one for a decent price id get it for him but my LS6 clutch cost me $300 on ebay so I dont know... if anyone has anything they are not going to use or is just sitting around in their garage PM me

Sounds good, i dont plan on going to the track when i have the stock clutch in it so it should last longer than i anticipated, even putting around 330 the the wheels. This makes me feel a little better, there are only about 3K miles on this clutch so hopefully it will last a bit and maybe hold up for a few 50 mph down shifts

i have been wanting to ask the same question.. since i put my peanut lpe216 cam and headers in my lt4 vette i did a huge burnout one night and it did bad things to my clutch.. now if i slip it just a little bit it smells like burnt clutch. doesn't seem to grab like it use to either.. it was a stock replacement clutch with 2000 miles on it. but i am not really finding any options for the dual mass flywheel.. i don't know if i want to swap over to a single mass cause i don't want to be hearing my tranny.. its loud enough as it is..

Hays makes a pretty nice clutch with stock like engagement but has a higher holding pressure and better disc (11" vs 10.4").

Don't forget the only upgrade for the LT1 pressure plate is the LT4 pressure plate, which most stock kits now come with anyway. Both are made by Valeo. ALL aftermarket clutch kits (except the McLeod twin disk) include the LT4 pressure plate (possibly painted or powdercoated):

So the best solution is to buy a parts store clutch kit ($200) but use a performance clutch disk instead of the one in the kit. Lots of details in this thread.

thanx for everyones info, the pressure plate is the only difference between my stock LS1 clutch and teh LS6 clutch i bought. As shown in your picture you can clearly see how the springs are difference between the LT1 and LT4 clutch, same senerio as the GM LS clutches...

My opinion... Jump right to a McLeod Street Twin!

I was running a LT4 clutch when my car was puting down 365 rwhp, and it couldn't hold that power on street tires. I bit the bullet and went with the Street Twin for my second clutch (actually 3rd clutch, if you count the stocker), and couln't be more happy with it!

The Street Twin feels exactly like the stock clutch, it just grabs harder. I never have to worry about over powering this clutch, even with slicks. I just makes sence to buy the best and never have to worry again.

Why get a clutch that will hold just a little more horsepower than your making currently, only to have to replace it later on because it won't hold the power your car makes in the future... and I don't want to hear all this crap about a Street Twin being over kill for xxxrwhp. We all know damn well that once you catch the "mod bug" your car will never be the same, overtime you WILL end up makeing more power then you do today, it's to damn easy (and cheap) to make power with these cars!

Buy once, buy the best, and be done with it... it will be cheaper in the long run! You can either learn the easy way from me and my own experiance, or the hard way... with your wallet in the future!

Thats good advice, thing is with my brotherm he just picked up a new 6 second baby (lucky friggin bastard) so whatever his vette is makeing in terms of HP now is probably what it will be making 10 years from now, and I dont want to go over kill on the clutch if I even get him one
