I talked to Craig (www.moates.net) about it yesterday and he's basically not interested in doing this. After discussing all the possible issues with the crank position sensor, gauge calibration, ignition system, and then having to get all the stuff required to program the LS1 ecm, it quickly didn't make sense anymore. Go aftermarket or MS.

I am still very interested in learning more about this. The fact that 3rd gen guys have it working means that there's at least some window of opportunity to get it working with an LT1. According to the sister thread on CZ28.com it looks like these vans even had an LT1 timing cover and crank position sensor.

As further motivation, you can tune this van's PCM with HPTuners as well as EFILive.

EDIT -- more info:

According to a quick google search, the part number of the PCM appears to be 12200411 -- found on '01 and '02 Chevy Express vans.
