Default a 307?? whats the thoughts?

I have a 1968 c-10 with the factory 307.

but i have heard alot of bad things about this 307, it runs fantastic,
I just purchased an:
- edelbrock performer aluminum intake
- edelbrock 600cfm manual choke carb
- i need to find a electronic ignition still
- i also have the new pipe to install the exhaust but i am pending on the new downpipes i need(iowa rust), but i got duals that'll dump right before the rear tires.

i guess my question, what do you think about sticking with the engine?

i dont see any trouble with the engine, with the modest mods i have(none installed yet) it should be a decently reliable engine. it runs great like it is!
I drive it all over the place!

what should i look for while i have it apart that would indicate any trouble?

im pretty new to the industry!

what do you people think???

i guess i should be more clear....

i am going to be setting the truck on a 1976 4x4 frame and plan on sticking with the 307.

most people think i am crazy when i say that but i dont see the problem, it'll be my truck, not a toy. the 307 has decent power

it's a 3 speed on the column.... which makes me remember something, does anyone make adapter/alternate transfer case that would connect the 3spd to the 4x4 of the 76 scottsdale???

Is there a reason you posted this in the LT1 section?

If the 307 is just a truck to drive, then there is nothing wrong with it. If its not broke, dont fix it. But any thing other than a daily driver for a 307 is pointless. Unless used as a boat anchor.

if you do decide to junk the motor it has a 327 crank in it so you might want to keep that

Notice the title of this forum? Not exactly just LT1 anymore.. not sure if a 307 counts as an SBC.. but carry on either way I'd say!

I like the 307.....very similar to a 327. I had one in a monte SS and it ran great. Nice thing is you can wind them up all day like the 327...the stroke is the same (3.25) for each..Its just the bore that is different.

If it runs great, I would keep it...the 600 is a good choice as well as the performer intake...put some 1 5/8" lt headers like hooker or hedmans as well as an HEI with good wires and coil.

You can always upgrade with roller rockers, cam, etc. Alot of people will say its not worth it but all these parts can be put on a 350 or 383 if you ever want to upgrade.

BTW...since its in a truck, torque is your friend.

Good luck and have fun.
Mike

I would keep the 307, for about as long as it gonna last. I had one in my 72 nova. I put way to big of a cam in it, and it held up for about 3k miles. then one of the lobes went flat. I used to wind that motor to about 6,800 all day. I had a victor intake and a 750 double pumper. With full exhaust.

Post count usually has little correlation to a person's knowledge

I like the smaller cub'd engines and there is nothing wrong with a 307, only thing that may not take to your liking is with the lack of cubes comes the lack of low end grunt...which are great for trucks. A 350+ cubed motor would work much better in a truck if your looking for some more performance out of it, if you just want to drive the thing then you're on the right track, exhaust stuff is good stuff to go with since you can swap is over to a larger SBC if you ever decided to, and if im not mistaken the intake can be swapped over as well but i could be wrong on this. Good luck

My first car had a 307 in it. I put headers, Performer intake, dual line 600 Holley, 204/214 cam, and flowmaster exhaust. The thing would rev to 6k easily and with 3.73 gears it was a pretty fun car. Too bad it didn't last longer, instead of rebuilding I replaced it with a 350. As mentioned above the only thing I'd be worried about would be torque in a 4x4.

not to start a pissing match, but (now being unaffiliated with the company and they can kiss my ***) 99% of the customers they **** off and i have to do damage control for had legitimat claims...but every once in a while i would run across a customer (ie: You) that was so out of touch with reality and had no legitimate reason to be pissed off, i promise you that whether you would like to admit it or not i could probably talk circles around you about these cars and the people i worked with (those i stayed in touch with and really truly cared) could do so even more so. I had a feeling this confrontation would arise at some point and though the business blows from the new owners, the technical advice was 2nd to none. We were willing to work with you, but i highly doubt we would sell used t-tops that we had recovered when we were barely making profit off of them to start with, such a complaint should have been made and a new set could have been sent your way, and that bs of not being able to call, out of 365 days and 24 hours each day not once could you ever find 10 mintues free to give a call? Puerto Rico may be in a different time zone but that doesnt mean that phone calls are dont make it

Liar....thats all I have to say about that. I will say it once again FBodyMotorsports are nothing but a bunch of crooks and scammers. BTW To the original poster: first, Im sorry this came up and second, if you ever need any performance part for your 307 NEVER consider these guys......ask around.
