I need to pull the motor so I can send the body off to paint with just a rolling chassis. I saw the long winded debate on which is easier, and have seen the how to's on how to drop it from the bottom ... however I want to yank it out of the top. Will I need to drop the tranny to get the angle needed to pull it out from the top? Also with a 1,250 lb engine stand hold the motor once its out? Finally is it easier to get the hoist in at the side, or just from the front? Thanks!
Come on man you know you can do it out of the bottom
I have always taken the tranny off when I pulled it out of the top but have read people getting all of it out in one piece. I would put the hoist in the front and make sure you extend the legs out as far as you can get them so it doesnt try to tip on you.

I did undo the tranny, and also the accessories from the front, the fans, both exhaust manifolds, the valve covers, the intake....
I used an adjutable tilter with 4 chains on the heads. I believe TPIS makes a gizmo that bolts to the intake called the Happy hooker that allows you to pull the engine without the tilt adjustment.
You will have to turn the motor sideways to get it out.
So, it is possible to get the motor out the top..
Have fun and make sure you have alot of bandaids..
