Default throttle body by-pass?

hey guys, how many of you have by-passed the coolant line that goes to your throttle body? i was at the track today and i looked at 2 fbodies that had taken that coolant line and by-passed their throttle bodies. they said it made a good bit of difference in the performance. they explained to me that by doing that the air that went into the intake was cooler because the throttle body gets warm as coolant flows through it. so do you think it's worth trying? and has anyone done it? thanks

I did it.. I believe the 97 is like the 95 and its REALLY easy to do. You just take the tube off the drivers side and attach it to the steam pipe on the valve covers on the passenger side (after disconnecting the other tube of course). it was recorded to do something like 6 rwhp when it was warm I believe.

Its one of the known free mods, definitely works. You will not necessarily feel a difference, but on the dyno you would see a couple horsepower once the motor is hot, at the track you might see a tenth, maybe. Thousands of people have done it, including my self on both Z's. Definitely worth the 2 bucks and 10 minutes it will cost ya.

+1! I did it and love it. I had no idea that the coolant made the intake that hot! Well worth the 5 bucks to do it.

Someone sells a kit on Ebay for this.. but there is people that buy it.
It can be done without even getting any kind of parts. Like mentioned above, just remove the section that attaches on the Dirvers side, and run it straight to the metal tube along side of the Intake. I did mine a little different when I rebuilt my Engine, took care of it completely.

It only cost $20 to fabricate, and it works very well, better than the Factory setup. And it's easier to remove, already had to do it once when I tore apart the old Motor, and built this one.

Pulling the return hose off the TB is a pain. It really tucked in back there. I left that hose on there untill the guys who did my intake leak pulled it off when they took it apart.

Just pull the front on off and plug it with some automotive caps. Go to lowes and get a brass connector and some 3/8 inch fuel line. Then disconnect the return line from the T fitting up high and plug it with a bolt. Take your new peice and that brass fitting and run it from the old hose to the T fitting where the return went. I am not sure if any of that made since, in that I just woke up. But I hope it helps.

He has a 97, he wont need to do the things the 93-94 guys have to do, 95-97 its as simple as pulling a hose and popping it on somewhere else.

is there anything bad that can happen if this is done? is there a chance that the throttle body can heat up and get hotter than the coolant would have been?

Ya, it might take a few for it to warm up in the Winter, but we shouldn't be driving them then! lol I do, but I've only been out like 3 times with my 'Bird

I noticed the difference, you get more throttle response.

EDIT: Oh and my 93 was a breeze. Took a 3/4 hose butt connector and 2 hose clamps. $4 and 5mins of work. But mine is TPI style TB still. 94+ changed it a lil bit. My factory hoses were long enough where I could ziptie them to the radiator support cowl, away from everything.

Oh sorry, I didn't realize there was a difference in TB between the years.

The purpose of this coolant deal was a GM idea that was kinda strange. They did this so that the TB would stay warm in subartic temps and the TB butterflies would not stick to the TB itself. So unless you plan on driving your car in Alaska, in the dead of winter... You shouldn't have an issue.

As for the coolant, cooling the TB off. I really doubt that the coolant helps that at all. I mean once you are moving and all the air from the radiator and fans is right there at it. I really doubt there will be an issue there. So many people do it on here and I haven't heard of a problem yet.
(But I could be wrong, I just did the TB Bypass this past December...so we will see)

Did everyone have to remove the TB and intake elbow to do it, or can it easily be done without removing anything?
