Default Not an LT1 mod question, but I need help from an LT1 guy

Car is full of coolant, got about 2 miles from my house and noticed the engine temp needle started climbing so I pulled over. Undid the cap and let all the coolant **** out. Refilled it with all fresh stuff, and about 1/4 mile up the road, it started climbing a little more and steadily...so I pulled over in a Family Dollar lot and parked it and got a ride to work. Prolly gonna take it home tonight when it's cooler outside. It never got any higher than it gets when I'm sitting at idle forever in a Hardee's drive through with the morning rush, so I caught it before any problems arose.

I haven't seen it leaking anywhere and the oil doesn't look like oil/water mix. I am going to have it taken to a shop, or a F body guy come by this weekend to see if we can figure it out, but looking for suggestions and ideas as to what it could be while I wait. It's always run right at normal temp unless I'm sitting at idle for a while of course, but it's always run just fine.

Are the Fans working, check the Fuze for them. Mine did the same thing, and the
Fuze was blown. Not having AC saves you in that one, I was able to get home without it getting above 200 driving at about 80 on some back roads.

Wouldn't the ram air effect on the radiator keep the car cool even if the fans weren't working? I'm probably going to just change the thermostat on the car this weekend anways. I'm HOPING I can get it fixed w/o having to replace the water pump, I DO NOT want to have to touch that

Where are the fuses/relays for the fans? I'll check them out too.

The little black Box on the Drivers side near the ABS. The Ram-air effect will work alright if you don't have AC, that Condensor kind of hinders it for you guys with it.
Air could be in the System also.

Yeah I'm going to change the thermostat this weekend and see if I can get a local LT1 guy to come over and help me check it out. And yes I do have a/c, however it's always run fine, just funny that it happened today outta the blue. Oh well, I'll check into it, thanks guys.

I haven't noticed it leaking, but then again, water dries up a whole lot faster than oil or whatever, and I haven't got a check to look under it cuz it's dark when I get home.

It went from the typical heat of like 160-180ish or so to climbing like an RPM needle (well not quite that fast). It never reached the redzone or nothing, so it never got any higher than that so it didn't really overheat. I saw it and pulled over before it got that hot.

get it up to 200 or 210 and see if the fans kick on like they are supposed to do at that temp. just watch your temp gauge. it sounds like you don't even have a problem

It would have to be the waterpump, thermo, fans, or air in the system. Unless you are missing the air dam components in the front nose on top of the ac condenser. Their isn't any water in the oil is their. A blown head gasket will also cause it to run hot. Just some things to think about. Their is two air bleeds in the system. One is located on top of the thermostat housing I think but I do know it is near there and one is located on top of a water hose running from the water pump to the radiator. It is typically found running parrell in front of the alternator. Hope this helps.

I had a similar experience. Turns out I had sucked a plastic breadbag into one of the fans and burned the motor out. Not your usual experience, certainly.

I checked the oil first thing and it still looked dark brownish/black. It didn't look like a cappucino or anything, so I'm sure that's not the problem. I'm just going to throw money at it and replace all the cheap stuff first, and if that still doesn't fix it, then I guess I'll have to dive into a waterpump

This crap WOULD happen a few days after I decided to sell it and get back into Nissans that I'm a bit more familiar with.

I thought it would be cool one day to pull my air dam from under my car and drive it around. It did basically the same thing. Start it up and let it idle, check that the thermostat is opening.

Just because the oil looks fine doesn't mean the head gasket is fine, don't ask me how I know. And it sounds like you have air in your system. How fast does the temp climb, and does it go down as soon as you rev it? If it does chances are teh coolant system just needs to be blead.

Merv is grossly overstating the "harm" an AC condensor does to the cooling offered by forward motion. Those of us with tuning software can adjust the mph the fans are shut off as so they do not hinder airflow, believe stock for the b-body was 48mph, don't know specifically about the f-body just saying if you were at any sort of speed atall forward motion would cool it even if the fans were dead.

I think it sounds like air in the system too.
