Default Fresh Engine Start Up Problem

Freshly rebuilt 383. The car will start but it will only run if I give it some throttle. When I let off the car dies. The idle screw on my AS&M Monoblade is all the way out. The timing adjustment screw on my MSD Opti is two turns out, IDK where to go from here. Let me know if any aditional info would help

The rockers could be too tight, and also check for crossed plug wires.

could be air in the fuel line, same thing happened to me when i first started my 383, just keep hitting the gas and run it, you also could need a tune. check your wires also

Don't have a scanner, if the wires don't do it I'll try and get it scanned. How long did you have that problem with the air in the fuel line? I've probably started it 5 or 6 times by now and it's still doing it.

it took about 20 minutes to start it, i just kept trying to turn it over, your problem sounds exactly like mine, when it would turn over i would have to keep my foot on the gas and when i did it would die. i also had a bad plug too. if you have the chance get it scanned, could save a lot of time.

Just pulled plug number 1 and it was really black but you could wipe it off with your finger, do I need to change my plugs before I go any further? Looks like detonation. Also, I was just thinking I may have them gapped wrong, I have them gapped at the stock spec and my motor is now an 11:1 compression 383, what should they be gapped at?

I'm also running NGK TR55 Iridiums if it matters.

Well for starters don't waste your money on iridium plugs. Just get the copper ones. Considering your plugs are black, that means you have a lot unburnt fuel there. Detonation was probably not the culprit there. I would go back over the ignition components and possibly look to other sensors like MAP and TPS. That's where you're gonna need a scanner. Probably would save a lot of time.
