Default 96Z28 Died on me..........HELP!

Alright, on my way to work yesterday, everything was normal, get about a mile down the road and the car just dies, kinda like if your batt died or something but still had power, tried to get it to pushstart itself by throwing it in 3rd but wouldnt, pulled over and it started up, okay, so I said, its fine. took off about 5 secs later dies again but wouldnt start at all. Pushed it to a gas station, put some gas in, still no start. Checked my fuses, check the coil for spark, was sparking, then I checked the fuel, pulled the fuel lines off the rail and turned the key on, plenty of fuel. Okay so still no start, even sprayed carb cleaner in it to test fuel again. Well then I pull a plug wire and turn the car over, no spark from the wires. So later that night I pull the distributor, put a new dist on it and it does the same thing, still no start. I put the bottom part but not the cap and rotor, cap and rotor is fairly new, plus I dont think that would stop it from sparking. So now not sure wat is wrong, maybe the crank sensor or something or what the hell, know its not getting spark out of the opti but is into it. But after it died the first time, came back hours later and it started right up, once I reved it, it died. Then no start, did the same thing for a sec this morning, any ideas. Sorry the ****s so long.

you're still getting spark from the coil? pull the wire top of opti and ground against the head while cranking (need a buddy) and watch it. If you're not getting spark the coil is likely shot. If you are getting spark here and not from the cap/rotor then there is your problem. Just wierd that all of this was sparking earlier when you tested. Anyway let us know if the coil is sparking or not. If it's not and it's stock you can check the ohms (I forgot the resistance it should be for GM OEM), the MSD Blaster Coils are a higher resistance (not sure what).

edit: just re-read your post, sounds like you did test the coil and it was sparking, the other thing you should have tested was the cap/rotor for spark at a plug like #1 (easy to get to), should be a strong 3/8" blue spark. You may have done this not sure from what I read though.

Yes I tested the coil, its MSD and I got spark, took the #1 wire off and tested it but no spark. But dont know how it could be the cap and rotor, I changed the bottom part of the optispark and I was thinking the optical sensor went out on it, which could be a reason it wouldnt start, unless I got a bad optical sensor on the new one too. I guess Ill try the cap.

there is no bottom per say to the opti, the base with the Mistubishi eye sensor, timing wheel for spark/fi and then your cap/rotor. If it was sparking #1 prior the cap change and not now it sounds like you've isolated it to the cap/rotor. The eye sensors very seldom ever go out, the bearings can wear and oil get in and effect the sensor eye itself (very rare). Usually it's the cap/rotor. Hard to tell online, wish I could see it in person to help you.
