Default oil pressure drops to zero when i brake

i have a 93 z. When i make a sudden stop, the oil pressure guage will drop to 0. The car still runs fine, its done this for about 6 months. I didnt drive the car for a couple of months, and now that i started drving it again the oil pressure has been low. I had the pressure checked in august and the mechanic told me the pressure is actually slightly higher than it should be, he said it seemed very healthy. Now at idle it is just above red most of the time, at other times ill stop and the pressure will read about 50 psi, but all the while the car runs fine. Can you help me

1. Check the oil. Fill if low.

If still low when braking:

2. Drop the pan. Re-install oil pickup tube on oil pump.

I agree....if oil level is correct - it is possible that the pick up tube is laying in the bottom of the pan. Might dump the oil and see if you can look through the drain hole and see it. Small fiber optic light would work well.

Yup...it is an interesting one...It is bored and stroked, 296 inches...Oh - heck - easier to give a link...

http://www.inliners.org/

Click on the 'racing' link on the left hand side. My car is the 6th down on the right column....'Rob Seuberts 296" camaro' there is a brief write up and pictures.

The only big thing I've done since the info on that link is 4.56 gears and the transmission...haven't run it yet with this set up...should be good. The gear jump alone should do wild things. Transmission is a clutch driven turbo 400 auto..so it is like a poor mans lenco..clutch to start, then grab handles. Have the Hurst Lightening rods shifter as well - so it even looks like a lenco from inside the car. Its kinda my baybe...had the car since '85.

Anyone have the GM part number for this? Mine is doing this as well kinda. When I drive the pressure says its right under half and when I brake it dips low, not to zer0 but low. It's been this way as long as I have owned the car, which is 3+ years. I've never noticed any problems it's just annoying. Any info is greatly appreciated.

it's the oil pickup/tube that fell off your oil pump.

That happens when they are not tacked on..

Definately sounds like the Pickup fell off. I got mine tacked in, good thing to do when you have it all apart. Once you get the Pan off, it's right there, 1 bolt.
