If you need to pass emissions 9 times out of 10 you'll need to settle for mids. Longtubes, however, will gain more hp/tq all the way across the board than mids ever will.

i have a set of mids you can buy, $200 for a set of pacesetters i just had coated. they costed $275 and i just spend $225 having them coated. they are basically brand new. i'll throw in the y-pipe for $40. so $265 for the whole deal plus shipping.
these are EMISSIONS LEGAL AND HAVE ALL FITTINGS.

I'm by no means contradicting you, but, I was lead to believe the smaller primaries (1 5/8" on most mids, compared to 1 3/4" on most LT's) gained better torque?.

Mids will have more low end torque compared to longtubes. You loose torque when the exhaust system has little or no backpressure. You get the same thing with cutouts. However, that doesn't mean horsepower isn't calculated in. You get the most hp with longtubes. Sadly, there is TOO MUCH info on this.. search.

+1 for mids when it comes to torque. If I could do it all over again I would have went with the LTs but I never thought I would get to this point with my car. Mids are not a bad choice in any way!

Long tubes unless emissions! I know plenty of people who have mids who wished that they had long tubes, I dont know of anyone who has long tubes who wished they had mids.

Go Longtubes, you will be happier, My advice is why spend money now for the Mids, when you just think about down the road mods and go for the good stuff instead of what will work the best right now.

The thing about mids is that they give you good torque and some more hp then the stocker, but after 4500 rpms or so, their effect really drops off.

At high rpms, (when racing) thats when LT's really shine.
Both choices will give an increase and torque and power all across the powerband, and even more with a tune.
But with that being said, I highly recommend LT's.
Especially with a cam, and/or all other supporting bolt ons.
Im thinking about trying out Kooks LT's by July.

Moving from MAC's w/ORY to 1 7/8 LT's w/ORY next week ... will post up with dyno graphs. The header/ORY swap is the ONLY change being made. Weather/humidity will be a little different but my numbers will always be posted as SAE correct numbers and the graphs will have the temp variant included. Gonna' lock the Yank down, as well. We'll see how the LT's fare and will keep you posted.

**** One more thing ... being an A4 car, I have too much unusable power down low, so, I'm doing this not just for more power, but, also to push the power/torque up to a useable range. You might also get more info if you read what I posted this morning ... asking comments from people who have had both.
