Default Oil Pump?

Well, I've finally had time to start again on my 94 Camaro project. Just wondering what is the best oil pump I need for my 383 with a stock oil pan? Do I need a High Pressure/High Volume or can I just use the stock one. This is going to be a street car so don't know what is best. Any advice?

Yeah I did a search but won't work for me

I would just go with a Melling M55HV High volume. Good reliable street pump. Be sure to get the matching pickup. Which is a a 55 S1 I beleive. You can use the stock one but if your in there it's cheap insurance. You will also need the upgraded oil pump drive #IS55E. This eliminates the plastic coupling sleeve and uses a metal one. All of these part numbers should also cross over to speed-pro so you can find them at most parts stores.

Better check into that m55hv melling pump.Mellings does not recommend that pump in any racing applications. They redesigned that pump and it is not very strong around the base.Your car might never see the track, I dont know, but why take the chance.Word is that if you leave hard it could brake right off at the base.Just call mellings they will verify it as the truth. There is even a small(too small)note that comes with the pump.Just trying to save you some trouble and money.Melling does sell a pump that will work but its a different part number and twice the price.

You should use one of melling select series pumps the PN I think is 10553. This is a stronger pump unlike the normal with more material at the base. HV is not recomanded with stock size oil pan.

Do not put a new mellings M55 pump on the car. It will break, and you could possibly blow your motor up. The new mellings M55 pumps are much weaker than the ones they produced a few years ago. I just installed a new mellings select, 10554 pump on my rebuild. This is the same pump mellings used to make, and sell under the M55 part number. They just claim now that its a "select" pump and raised the price $50.

A few years ago I would have said Melling, hands down. Now, I'm not so sure. I'm not 100% positive if it applies to your application, but I'm guessing it does. Read why here:
