T56 Q's???
Whats the average life span for a T56?
How much HP are they rated for?
i have just under 160K and no 3rd gear with 4th going out (i'm the 4th owner and it also having been previously been confinscated by a sherrifs depo) i looking to get a remaned (prolly T56rebuilds.com). My current HP goal is 370 to 400. i have all the basics with stock gears (going to change to 4.10's eventually) i also plan on getting a new clutch kit (spec?) and 13 - 18 lb aluminum flywheel combo. i think all in all it should be around 3 grand on parts and doing labor myself (having done once before). Any input is appreciated.

some people run around 700rwhp with stock t56's for awhile with a good clutch. I was around 550rwhp for about a year with a stock t56 but i beat the living **** out of it and powershifted at the track everytime. I have since upgraded some internals so it takes whatever I throw at it now.. even 6500rpm clutch drops on slicks

LT1 T56s arent as strong as LS1 T56s.
During the years of GM using the T56 the manufacture went back and forth a few times and then finaly ending up with tremec. The newer the trany you have the more power it will take. They started being built much more solid in the later years.
CRAGER has an MTI 427ci LS1 making 545rwhp through a stock T56 and a Mcloed twin disk. Same goes for many other LS1 guys.
Good Luck.
Tony.

My tranny has been through some hell, didnt mess up until about 160k. Syncros went out and the assemblys were bad, I rebuilt it and put new syncro kit but that was okay until NOW my tranny is messed up because the assemblys got worse and wont go out of gear, easy in, hard out. So ima have to rebuild it fully this time.
Otherwise I say good to about 800HP or so. The T-56 is a strong as tranny and you can still build a bulletproof one.

I know the stock plastic fork pads suck. They tend to crack off at the end of the fork causing metal to metal contact. The input shaft of the ls1 is a little bit longer and the slave cylinder design is a little different as well as the bell housing but they are pretty much the same besides that. I believe 01 and 02 got the steel shift forks from the factory
