I received my custom cam from Bret Bauer the other day, so I'm all pumped to change my cam, right? Tonight I took out my cam and...

I had the EXACT situation. Got cam from Bret and saw they same bearing damage. Do yourself a favor and get an extending mirror and you will see it effects more than the the 1st bearing. I was able to change mine in the car with a bearing tool. Not as hard as some will tell you. Better you found it now than later.

Somebody told me it could be from the pressure of the water pump drive??

^ thats what I think the problem is as well. It seem to be a LT1 only problem that doesn't affect other SBC's as much.

This was the main reason I switched to a EWP.

If the other bearings are fine I am just going to change the front one. If not, I'll be pulling the motor to freshen it (still leaving stock internals). Kind of a bummer though.

Well I got a mirror on an extending stick and a flashlight and took a look back there. The only bearing I can't reach is the rearmost bearing. They all look the same as the front one; great on the top half, so-so on the bottom. Not sure what I am going to do at this point. I would say it is more from the pressure of the valvetrain than the stock waterpump.

We changed all of mine on my first swap as well. I also added a new oil pump while the motor was out. Cheap insurance....

ive seen the same damage in the older sbc motors as well. i believe its from the timing chain loading the front of the cam.

Pulled the motor and tore it down this morning. Pretty much a false alarm. Brass cam bearings

FYI they are NOT supposed to look like that, those bearings are GONE.

Stock cam bearings are NOT Brass. Thet are how ever can have a thinner babit coating. Once GM and the very high end rebuilders will line hone them after installing in the block. The water pump drive is a big factor on the wear. There was a A/B test and showed it would last but might not look so nice.

Whoaa big man settle down. I said they were brass, didn't say they weren't worn. They are being replaced along with the rest of the bearings.

If they are not brass then what are they? Bronze? Copper? Brown steel? Dyed glass? Cryogenically frozen poopoo?

I'm not to worried about it, no longer a problem.

93-94k.

93-94k.

I was told the gold color was babbit, it has a coating over it. Once the coating is gone, the bearing is done.
