Default Lt1 Overheating!

I have a 96 LT1 and it keeps getting HOT! Like 230 -240 degrees. I have an electric water pump. The motor is in a 91 and I have the stock electric fan off the 305 that came out of the car. And a four row aluminum griffin radiator. I thought maybe the water pump was spinning backwards. So I switched the wires and it did the exact same thing. It has the stock thermostat. Someone PLEASE HELP!

you have all the air bled out of the system?? Do you properly have the electric waterpump wired up to a relay?? Do you have PCM programming to allow the fans to turn on earlier?

The fan runs all the time. The air is bled out of the system. The water pump is wired up to a relay. It did pull two codes though. MAP sensor and ESC. Which I definatley dont see having anything to do with overheating. The car takes awhile to get hot. But it stops between 180 and 190, but as soon as it passes 190 it just keeps on getting higher. And its usually when i take my foot off the accelerator and start to slow down. And also in stop and go traffic, then it gets hot really fast.

you said its in a 91. does that mean that you installed a lt1 in a 91 camaro? if so does that car have an air dam?

My ls1 was doing the same thing , it would hit 210 and keep rising !so i would shut down b-4 it could get to hot . i change the t-stat thinking it went out but it did the same thing again it kept rising so changed out the water pump , it was my problem the water pump was no good it went out.I would think its most likely your problem too. i hear they always go out on LT1'S. so i would change the water pump. GM cars take dexacool antifreeze. good luck with that i know howe that feels it drives you crazy when something is wrong with your baby

I did the SLP fan switch, now my car runs at 170 all the time. I also did the 160 t-stat. Try that it will take care of the overheating

i think he is talking about the black plastic that is under the car that bolts up to the lower radiator mount.

do you think there is any chance of a headgasket?

maybe you might want to step up and get a set of dual fans.

if there is no air damn then you should install one it helps bring the air up through the radiator from under the car. i would check that Electric water pump and see if it went bad. I know that those electric water pumps all have different Gallons Per Minute or whatever maybe its not circulating the fluid fast enough. Just some Ideas. also check your thermostat. I would Say its your water pump wouldnt it damage it if you switch the wires around since one is the ground.

+1 on the plastic air dam. Makes a HUGE difference in cooling.

Antifreeze wise, LT1 can take Green or Orange doesnt really matter.

Now did you do any modifications to this engine before installing it into the car? Like perhaps removing the coolant crossover pipe on the rear of the cylinder heads?

When does it do this (idle, cruise etc). If it's when you are moving then the air dam is definitely the problem. If its at idle then its probably something else (since the air dam doesn't really do anything then).

i would also be looking at that fan thou, seriously. That 305 fan isnt crap. lt1s have a dual fan set up that blows alot better than that other one does. Also on the GPH i thought that stock lt1s flowed like 40?

im not sure what they flow but i was looking at a dual 10 inch fan setup with a shroud and the car does have a air dam. i got under the front today and seen it. maybe i need a bigger water pump also. i will look into that.
