Default tranny let go?!? help!

okay..i was on my way into town today...and my car was driving fine...it suddenly shifted into 3rd gear and the speedo went dead...the car has been stuck in 3rd since then...i have absolutley no idea what it could be...any help is much appreciated...the car is a 94 z28 a4

It sounds like your shift solinoid. you mite have to get a new wiring harness

but what would cause the speedo to stop working as well??

update...when i start the car up cold it will start in first gear...tach to about 5000 rpms then shift really hard into 3rd.. no 2nd or 4th.

That I don't know, there are a lot of people on here that know there ****. Give them time and they will help you.

also when I said wiring harness I mean the one in the trans not the one to the motor

My v6 camaro did the same thing it was the noids in the trans. Is there any codes

i haven't had a chance to get the car by autozone or anything for them to scan it...my car has been throwing a 02 sensor code for a while so the SES light is always on...im just waiting for my headers to get in to change the damned things out...looks like i might need to save up for a new tranny..sigh

That's wierd.. when I killed my Tranny in a race the Speedo still worked no problems..
It does sound like a Shift Solenoid, cause if it lost total power, it would go into default mode, basically only 3rd gear.. that could be something there also..

well like i said..on a cold start it will take off in 1st the sihft really hard into 3rd and then stay in 3rd until i shut the car off and let it sit until cold again...this is why i like standard trannys...

Auto will kick the **** out of a Standard, that's proven fact..just have to have it built right..
It sounds like you lost some of the Solenoids in there, and it's shifting out of 1st at that RPM due to the safety Valve in there..

Also the trans pump could be bad. I would have it look at. sounds like it time for a new trans.

yes..when i manually shift the car into 1st and give it some gas...it trys to move and the car shudders real bad...same for manually shifting into 2nd..i assumer those clutchpacks are wasted...im just guessing the the others finally let go...

when my trans went in my Z28 all I had was reverse, I drove home in reverse for like 2 miles

How much money do you have to spend.. I have a nice built LT1 4L60E..rated for 600hp, Transgo HD2 Kit in it..

Your tranny has gone into limp mode. It means that there is a problem involving your tranny electronics. If you lost your spedo then check the speed sensor on the left side of the tail shaft housing to make sure its still plugged in. Also check the harness to the tranny to make sure its not cut or burned, and plugged in. Otherwise get it scanned. That should tell the story.

All the Tranny related stuff is on one of the Connectors on the PCM.. highly unlikely, but it could of vibrated loose..
