with hydraulic lifters or solid? they are two different animals
with hydraulic lifters there is a few ways to do it.
I use the spin the pushrod while tightening the rocker nut, then when the pushrod has resistance and stops wanting to spin I turn 1/2 turn more, or 1/4 depending on what the rocker manufacturer says
