Timing Chain Set???
Timing Chain Set??? hello,
I have a 1994 firebird formula, i can't find a timing chain set for my year, i always see them go for either 1993 or 1995-97, and what i have read was that if i go with the timing chain of the 1995-97 i would have to switch to a vented optispark, i'm looking at going with a gm 847 cam and i would like to only replace the timing chain set instead of changing that and the optispark. Can someone please help me with a part # or a web link

Being a 94 we got 3 choices...stock set, Comp Cams set, and Lunati set. I personally went with the Lunati cuz its GM sprocket and gear but a Lunati chain, plus its kinda cheap. The Comp set is almost $500! Big no for me. The Lunati is fine with my cam setup (cc503) no problems yet. But at the same time I've never heard of the stock set breaking either.
you cant run any timing chain on '94 and pre-94 because it has a non vented opti. Im in the same delema here bro. And if you got a EWP you should put a reg. sbc crank gear on to take up the slack in the chain. but if your still using the OEM water pump then nevermind that, youll need the slack. So its eaither the Lunati or oem from autozone. Sucks to be us '94 guys!

Verdad Gallardo ok, after more research. if you do the ewp, you get a cloyes oversized crank gear from somewhere (summit, autozone etc.) so it takes out the slop in the chain. So run a stock cam sprocket, stock/aftermarket chain and the cloyes oversized crank sprocket.
