Default Need advice on 2 bolt or 4 bolt main...

Will a 2 bolt main be good enough for a 383 LTI w/ 400ish rear wheel horsepower? Possibly going to spray it w/ 125 or 150 shot. Or should I go with 4 bolt main??

It you have the chance to get a 4-bolt, grab it. You can always splay the 2-bolt also.

To my knowledge a splayed 2-bolt block is stronger than a stock 4-bolt block. So yes I would just buy it and have it splayed.

No, just get the 2-bolt block and do the 4-bolt splayed.

I just got a 496 4 bolt main block for $750

2bolt will handle what your looking to do. Put ARP studs and call it good.

True it will but the question is for how long... If you have the money you might as well have the block splayed now.

I wouldnt run a 2 bolt in your case. My 383 was only 350ish to the ground(mustang dyno, so near 400), plus a 150 shot(450 something on the juice if I remember right), for one summer, maybe 10 or so bottles total, and my main bearings were very near spun. The caps were walking on the block as well. I would splay a 2bolt if I were you. It will only cost you a few hundred bucks in machining, so why not. Right now you plan on only 400 rwhp plus a small shot, but what happens when you get bored next year and would like a lot more power, then you're going to be redoing the bottom end anyways.

One of the guys is running a 2 bolt/arp studs with a 175 shot for the last 6 years. last june went thru his engine..and everything looked great.

Yes if you have the extra money to do a splayed bolt conversion then do it right and get them pinned. The pinning is a bigger help then the 4-bolt. Just very hard to pin a 2bolt.

Like already stated. A splayed 2 bolt is superior to a 4 bolt.
