i just had the old, old, old coolant replaced today and i am still overheating. the only way to stop it is to turn the heat on all the way. im thinking i might need a new thermostat, but im not sure if the fans are coming on either. any help guys?

EDIT: almost forgot, the low coolant light has stayed on, even though it is full.

 

did you bleed it for air where that little flat head mark on the lines is?

 

i had my work do it (sears auto) as im getting alot of other things fixed at once. i assume they did, but i can ask tomorrow

 

either way thermos are cheap and easy to install may aswell get a 160 deg.

 

yea a 160 will help i just had this problem , look for my thread i think may help u. But i got me a new fan motor or something and that overheatin problem stoped but im still trying to get a 160 thermostat.

Are your coolent hoses getting very hard to squeeze.....head gaskets?....

 

cooling fan's turn on at 235 degree's if im not mistaken. how hot did your car get? Check the radiator cap. a pressure test on the cap, if its not holding pressure you will over heat.

the low coolant sensor going bad is a comman problem, just leave it disconnected and it wont light up on your dash, its mounted passenger side radiator side tank.

 

Bleed the Air out of it.. then go from there and let us know..

i know its gotten to about 250. lately ive just been turning the heat on all the way to keep the temps down. ill see about the air later today.

 

keep us posted but that thermo will help you out . also may i suggest you check the fans if those are ****** up get another fan motor or whatever that **** is called(correct me if im wrong) and get a manual fan switch.

 

First off, a 160* Thermo will help, but if your present thermo is not malfunctioning, it will not solve the problem.

Secondly, I think your fans may not be turning on. You should be able to hear a 'click' when they do.
I have a little trick for you to see if they work.

When your car temp needle is halfway , or 210*, click your climate **** to AC and leave all the other dash ***** on their lowest setting. By just turning the **** into the "AC" position.
Basically when you do this, the stock LTI PCM is set so when you turn your AC on at this temp or near this temp, it compensates for the extra work the motor has to do to run the AC and turns the fans on thier 'high' setting to cool the motor down.

It is very easy to hear LT1 fans on 'high', they aren't the quietest.
If your fans are not working, or your high speed 'setting' is not working, I would be shutting it off at stoplights.

If your fan are working correctly, change the thermo.
If that doesn't do it, its the waterpump.

 

yes, replace thermo and radiator cap, maybe engine temp sensor too. all cheap and easy to replace. had hell with mine over heating, after i replaced everything was still overheating. bought a manual fan switch and it hasnt gotten over 220 since. i strongly recommend getting one.

update guys, the coolant has been bled, and it still overheats. the fans are not coming on AT ALL. if it sits at operating temp, it will began a slow march to 260 over about a 3-minute period. im going to pick up a new thermostat soon. i assume i need a new fan motor too.

 

Yea that exactly what you need , go to your autozone store and get a 160 hypertech thermo and go to summitracing and get a manual fanswitch.

PS make sure it also isnt the radiator hope we all have been a great help to you

 

Make sure the Temp Switch on the front of the Water Pump is working correctly..
My complete Fan System went to ****, so I wired in a Manual Fan Switch and haven't had a problem since.

 

The temp sensor merv is talking about is what tells the pcm to turn the fans on.

Also try unhooking the maf sensor, the fans should kick on and stay on.
