Default Need Help Choosing Rotating Assembly

What do you guys think about the Scat forged rotating assembly in the Jegs magazine?? Seems like a decent price for forged components ($1566.99). I don't know what brand of pistons they use, does Scat make pistons?? I would like to be able to spray with a 125 or 150 shot, I'm sending my block to the machine shop very soon to be cleaned, splayed and the whole nine yards. I just wanted to get some opinions on this rotating assembly and see if anybody had some other ideas. Also what would be the better choice 6" rods or 5.7" rods?? What are the pros and cons of the two??

I'm going with Llyod Elliot for my heads, cam and intake. Hoping for around 430 to the wheels plus the spray, so nothing real big, just want a powerful street car. I rarely get to go to the track so I'm not going to beat up on it too bad..lol.

Eagle IMO is the best for the money, Compstar is making waves in the LS1 world...haven't seen anyone in the LT1, Gen1 world use them yet.

Probe Racing also makes some NICE stuff, I have used them alot, very big company in the Ford/Mustang world.

Callies Compstar brand is very popluar in the LT1 world.

Check them out. For the money and quality I just don't see any other brand coming close.

Link to Compstar web page

For up to 200hp nitrous 383 then the Compstar kit with the Mahle flat top or -16cc D-dish (and 6" rod) would be awesome. You can get the kit from Vendors on this board I'm sure.

Well, consider the Callies Compstar kit anyway over the SCAT and Eagle forged kits. (Probe uses the same source for crank and rods as Eagle as far as I know). In this case a few extra $$$ is very well worth it.

Not a big fan of Eagle stuff for any setup.

Compstar is top notch IMO, great stuff and lots of guys that go fast have been using the stuff.

What cubes are you planning to go with?

Tony.

I'm planning on doing a 383. Like I said above 430ish to the wheels is what I'm trying to achieve with the motor, plus a 125 or 150 shot of spray.. .
Nothing too crazy, I just wanted a powerful street car that I could take to the track every now and agian. Also which rods should I use? 6" or 5.7", which would be better for what I'm trying to accomplish?? I'll definitly look into the Callies stuff, do you know which vendor on the board sells them?? Thanks for all your help guys.

Advanced Indcution is a Callies dealer, (Ai). I think they are a board sponsor.

what size rod?

The longest rod that you can use that still allows your piston ring package to NOT have to use an oil ring support rail.

That would be 6.0" rod and the Mahle piston. The 6" rod (1.125" compression height) Mahle piston does not have the piston wrist pin intruding into the oil ring package so you don't need an oil ring support rail like in the SRP or JE piston of like size. It can take quite a bit of nitrous also with a good tune up.

If you had a severe blower or turbo car you'd want a shorter rod only because your piston would need to have the rings further down and away from the heat. A big nitrous tune up would probably be the same in that you'd want the 1st piston ring to be far away from the piston crown.

But 150-200hp nitrous tune-ups are not so hard on any piston really. Even stock hyper pistons can take that.

How much is your budget?

Low budget:

Scat stuff is a great pick for the smaller budget. Can not say anything bad about them and really like the 4340 Ibeam 7/16 rods for a small budget.

Medium budget:

Callies has a great product also. Top notch

Oliver is also top notch. Like the Oliver rods over the Callies
