Default Re-Gearing lowering top speed?

I wanted to re-gear my Trans Am with 3.73's but a couple people told me this would lower my top speed dramitcally, any truth to this?

not dramatically, in my humble opinion, it increases your top speed. i know theoretically, speaking from a m6 standpoint, it would be lowering the top speed. but the 6 speed cars gears calculate out to 220mph. but aerodynamics and hp will not allow the car to get near that. sooooo, by putting a lower gear in it actually puts you at a higher RPM at a given high speed. say at 155mph, in 6th gear most lt1's are really pulling anymore but have plenty of gear left. with the lower gear, higher rpm, will actally let you achieve a higher speed. thats just the way i look at it, which happens to be from a m6 standpoint.

He clearly has an auto with 2.73s. Regardless, LT1MAN is right.

I've taken my car up to 160-ish with 2.73s. It shifted into 4th gear and wouldn't pull anymore. If I were to put in 3.73s, I would likely be able to make use of all of 4th gear, or at least much more of it while surpassing the previous barrier of ~160.

Another nice little side benefit to running higher gears is the additional "simulated" torque.

And let's be honest: how often do you really think you'll need to go 160+MPH?

My car with 2.73 and a A4 would go to about 150 then I went to 4.10's and it still will get to about 150 just now it is about 6000+ rpm's. Give or take.

Does it really matter?

155 MPH is a fair drag-limited top speed for a relatively stock LT1 F-bod. How often, if ever do you drive it that fast? My A4 C5 Vette with a 3.15 axle and a 6100 shift point gets 4th gear about 155. I've never seen that on the road.

Anyway, here's the math:

With 2.73s your A4 in 3rd (not 4th OD) would be ~5550 rpm @ 155 if the converter was locked, and a little higher if unlocked. That's not far off the stock power peak. If you or the trans shifted into 4th @ 155, revs would drop below 4000 and the car would slow dramatically because of much lower hp @ 4000 than 5600.

With 3.73s 155 mph would be~5300 @ 155 locked up in 4th (OD). With the converter unlocked you'd be just about power peak rpm. If your engine was mildly modified, 162-165 might be closer to max speed which would get you closer to 5600-6000 rpm, about where the mildly modified engine peaked.

Bottom line is the 3.73s will be as fast or faster than the 2.73s and the 3.73s are going to get you to 155 quicker. The only real disadvantage to 3.73 over 2.73 is fuel economy at normal highway speeds with a stock or relatively stock engine.

Those "people" are wrong, but it is a moot point, because you don't drive @ those speeds. OK, if you do it's probably on a l-o-o-ong road course track, and you certainly wouldn't be running 2.73s! You'd probably be in the 4.10 range even with a strong LT1.

Show me the formula for calculating what gear ratio it would require to outrun their CB radio's and I might consider it.
