Default 240 degree engine temp!!!

My LT is stock except for LT's and ORY, so why would it be running at 240 degrees? Any ideas how to fix and where is a good place to get a lower thermostat? Thanks.

Are both your fans coming on? That seems quite hot.
Hypertech sells a 160 stat, and other vendors do as well, or they carry the Hypertech part. But you have to reprogram your PCM to turn on the fans at lower temps to support the new thermostat.

Mine used to run really hot like that. A 160* stat and a tune to turn your fans on earlier helps a million. My car never even sees 190 now

yea, same thing really just you have to switch it on manually. I would do the stat as well though. It is like $20. worth it in my opinion.

Stock LT1's run very hot. The stock fan settings are like 220. Just get a 160 degree thermostat and a tune to turn the fans on quicker and you'll be set.

Default Imho...

Dude, if I were you, I'd try hard as hell to find out WHY it's running that hot, rather than looking at band aids. I found out the hard way that while they run a little hot compared to some other cars, it's not supposed to run consistently at 240. Keep it up and you're looking at a blown head gasket or worse. There's something wrong with your engine/cooling system and you should take the time to find out what that is.

Check out my nightmare:

Had I just taken my car in for a simple coolant check I would have saved myself a lot of grief.

^^ agree, while I got lucky and the two things helped (tune,160 stat). There is a chance your cooling system is messed up some how. Best to check and see. Better safe than sorry ya know?

That sounds really hot.. although stock gm settings suck. I have a 160 and my fans tuned for it, never really gets above 170, got to 180 sitting in traffic with AC on in 103 degree heat yesterday lol

is it running at 240 while driving at cruising speed, or just when in traffic or idling?.

Have you tried bleeding the coolant system?.
Are you sure its running hot and not just a faulty gauge?

lol Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out it's because of air flow

Sara, as far as my buddies, either his Vette's gauge is wrong (I don't always trust digital dashes, personally) or sensor. He's flushed it 3 or 4 times he's said, and he has a burp funnel so no air. It runs about 220 while driving. Which is still high since LT1s came with 180º TStats.

220 is not that uncommon for a stock LT1. The stock fan settings in a 93 are 226.4 F for fan 1 and 235.4 F for fan 2.

At cruising speeds the fans are irrelivent. If its running hot at cruising speeds then there is a problem with the coolant system (trapped air, blockage, bad pump, head gasket, etc), if it only gets hot sitting in traffic or idling, then its more likely fan related.

i have a 97 Z28 that did the same thing the fans are programed not to turn on until the temp gets way into the red that is normal to a point mine was about 235 and then it would kick the fans on and drop. i bought a manual fan switch kit from slp and my car sitting in traffic in hot weather with the fans manually switched on high never gets above 180. i think that all you need is a manual switch if you want to eliminate this problem or you can just live with it. it is very scary but thats how the LT1 cooling systems are designed. it actually is an emissions feature. a hot engine runs more effiecent, but we all know that cold engines run stronger and EMISSION FEATURES SUCK!!!!!!

so if you want to run cool just get a manual switch no 160 stat needed keep in mind the lt1 was designed to run at 180 not 160.

If your temp went into the 'red' you got problems, at that point its running at 260*.
