LT1 Making noise and volts are low????
So me and my brother-in-law have a auction license and we are mainly buying z28/trans ams and selling them. Well we found a real nice z28 with 124k on it and when we started it up the belt made a ton of noise and the volts were low, about have way into the red. We turned off the car and inspected the belt and it was lose and it looked like it need a new one. I really don't know whats wrong with it but my main guess is that it need a new alternator becasue when the car runs it make a weird sqweeking/grinding sound and it seems to be coming form the Alt. Also i kinda smell a bit of gas too
I don't know but what do you guys think it might be.

Sounds like maybe the bad belt ruined the bearing in the pulley. And if the belt was slipping or something , maybe not turning the alternator fast enough to charge. Gas smell could be anything. Leaky exhaust? Just loading from not being driven in a while? Bad coolant temp sensor (fueling incorrectly cuz it doesn't know how hot it is).

Mine's got 110k on it. I would replace the alternator and the belt and that would take care of most of it. Yeah $4k is too high all things considered. You gotta replace the alternator and belt (~$150) paint the front bumper cover (~$500 on up) and whatever else is wrong with it. Then you turn around and sell it for not much more than $4K anyway.

My guess is just a bad alternator. When they go bad (bearings, voltage regulator) they get harder to spin and start to make noises. That, and with more friction the belt will start to slip and make it's own noise. I'm sure a new alt would fix that car right up.
