What brand stall should I get?
What brand stall should I get? I am looking to upgrade my stall converter in my LT1. I have a LT4 Hot Cam, 30lb SVO injectors, 58mm throttle body, 1.6 rrs, and soon going with 3.73s. What is the best converter for my car with out breaking my wallet? I am thinking about going with atleast a 3200. Please let me know what you think. Thanks.
Edge is a very good converter too, couple hundred less than Yank and Vig because it has a stamped cover instead of billet. May technically be weaker but I could not even guess at what level that becomes an issue, other than I have never heard of it being an issue. Still I think they are $525 or thereabouts, you go cheaper than this though and you are going to get a lesser product in function.
look...cant go cheap with a stall your car wont perform like what you want....oout of a buncha things you can cut corners i dont think a stall is one...it can literally make or break an auto car...id go yank...i love mine

Ive used Pro Torque and Percision Industries, both work fine, with your set up you could run a 2000 rpm stall and see a awesome gain. I ran one and was quite please but if you ever want to go up in cam the stall needs to match.
3000-3500 is more then enough for the street/strip.
FYI if its a 94/95 trans you need the stall wall fix, 93/96/97 dont have that issue.

Have you ever driven a QUALITY stall? My guess is no, lots of people are happy with stuff till they get to compare it to truely good parts, a few former Fuddle believers have done this and changed their story.
Like I said the difference between Edge and then Vig and Yank is Edge has a stamped cover instead of an overkill billet one, that accounts for the $200 difference in price. You get down into the $400 range of Fuddle, Midwest, TCI then you are getting cheap parts in every sense of the word.
Several guys on the b-body boards have gone back and forth between Edge and Yank and consensus seems to be Yank drives a little better and Edge launches harder, nobody said the Edge drove badly though. A few guys who have had Vig and Edge like the Edge better.
Price is no guarantee of quality either, I had a $7-800 billet Level 10 2600 stall that drove worse than the 3400 Edge and ran HOT, not to mention the hub being .1" runout, not a typo a tenth of an inch.
Ask the companies you talk to what future rework costs, some have a high flat rate others charge for actual repair necessary. If you put a stall in front of a stock tranny eventually the tranny is going to wear out(not the fault of the stall) and the converter will need to be gone through. Choose carefully and the choice can save you money for years to come.

Fuddle here. No problems so far. Knock on wood. Now Frank Calhal from CPT who built my transmission told me to go Yank (if I want to spend alot), Vigi, Protorque or Fuddle. I asked him about Edge and a few others and his reply was if I thought they were good converters, I would have told you to get one. Im happy with my choice for my application. However im probably going to be building a motor this winter, and im probably going to grab a 4-4400 Yank.
I would go with a Vigilante and call them for the right stall for your application...My thoughts would be with a 3200, maybe a bit more...Generally, you want a stall of 500-900 rpm below the torque peak of the motor...This is one of the few times where I encourage folks to use a dyno...Driving a Vig is like driving a stocker until you hit the gas...I run a 3600 and have since 1996 with no issues...They are a very efficient converter and will really wake up that combo...The key to making the A4s work is to match the cam, converter and rear gear, this is where many folks mess up...Don't skimp on the converter, you'll hate your car if you do...

I should say that Jeff Green's 9 second 4500lbs Impala runs a Rossler 4L60E with a Vigilante converter, that is good testimony for Vig.
The fastest bolton b-body is running I think a 3600 Yank with some special internals, that guy is amazing at wringing out a car though 12.3 NA 11.3 on a 150 shot, stock heads and cam, is not a street car though 4.88s out back and such, not cut up but signifigantly bolted OFF.

Converter choice is a big decision and you will always hear both sides on certain companies. IMO as stated, you can't go wrong with Yank, Vig, Edge, ATI.
ATI does not offer a lockup converter for the 4L60E. If going PURE race then an 8" ATI is likely the best choice. Stalls start about 4000rpms on those and like I said no lockup, the are good for ET though.
A bone stock computer program will get confused with the rpm rise and a burnout or hard launch can send the computer into limp mode, tranny wont shift and such.
Any COMPETENT tuner can easily deal with it in the programming, even some incompetent ones can if they remember. Some of the high volume guys make A LOT of mistakes, things like forgetting to fix this and such, so if you have the issue it is a tuning thing.
