will shorty headers make noticably more noise up front that can resemble an exhaust leak?

No, but an exhaust leak can sound like an exhaust leak!

it doesn't really sound like a leak but it seems like they are making noise maybe it is leaking through my EGR or something if the headers aren't supposed to make any noise

They will make more noise in the engine bay, but it should not sound like an exhaust leak.
