Yes, it is easy to accidentally put it in the wrong slot so start it with the pump and everything still off so if it is in the wrong hole its a 10 minute fix rather then another hour or 2.

if the timing is off would it try to crank or would it just not get any spark at all?

This is where im at at the moment...trying to figure out why it wont crank. And yea... +1 on the water pump off. Theres no point in it being on there while you are trying to time it because it is six long bolts that would be going in and out ALOT. lol

OKay, so i started it ran it without the pump and everything sounded good, put everything back together with a massive headache......i moved it out of the garage and let it idle makin sure there were no leaks, we we're still good, but when i pulled it back in it started to back fire around 2500-3000rpm.....i have a 6-spd....and so i tried it acouple more times and it still pops....so does my car just hate me and pretended to be timed right and is actually not in the right slot?.....idle sounds and holds great....

I just installed a new opti and I think it can only go in one way. There is one elongated slot that engages the cam pin... I don't think the cam pin will fit into the other slots, but I will say that mine still backfires like crazy and won't even start, so at least you are father along than me..

Triple check all your plug wireless that go into the coil, make sure they are in the right slots. Sounds like they're not plugged in right. Then again i would THINK it would idle funny if they weren't plugged in correctly.

I think it's pretty fool proof and only goes on one way. I'm waiting for someone to tell me differently..

The opti will slide into the clovers if your not careful and will throw the timing out. I always mark the top, to make sure the bearing doesn't spin while I'm installing it.

ViCtOrY lol alrighty so turns out i killed....well, half killed....a wire in the opti swap. So with that fixed the birds flyin high again and on top of that i managed to find a massive vacuum leak in my TB, so alls well that ends well. Think that this is a job that all mechanics should have to complete cause just when you think you know what your doing, you have to go and learn somethin new. Thanks for answerin my Q's guys and good luck to those who are still havin problems.
Thnx
