Default Is this opti failure?

Last night me and a couple of buddies went out trying to have some fun before it gets too cold out. My car was warm, around 180*, it started to surge and backfire once or twice. Then it stopped for awhile. We stop and get some food and we get back onto the highway and it started surging and backfire a little bit. I have recently changed the wires to msd 8.5 super conductors and the plugs are good. Could it be a fuel pump or my opti going bad? Thanks for the help anyone.

I could have a crossed wired. When you say crossed wire, does that mean that the wires are just crossed on the way to the spark plugs or does it mean something else? Thanks alot so far fellas.

If you crossed awhire the would mean the wire coming from the opti spark thats suppose to be one cylinder 3 would be on cylinder 5, and the wire that is suppose to be on cylinder 5 is on 3. causin it to miss on 2 cylinders. Your opti should be numbered 1357 on the drivers side, and 2468 on the passenger side, make sure your wires go to the right spark plugs.

I can't see it being a crossed wire... it would do it all the time if it did. Now fouled pule maybe or fuel filter... At least that would be my angle of approach. they are fairly cheap and fairly routine maintenece. or something like O2 sensor on its way or something like that.

i highly doubt its a misfire, mixed up plug wires, because it would idle on only 6 cylinders then, and depending on wich are switched around cause extreme knock(detonation) or backfires through the intake. it could be the wires are crossed over eachother not installed in correctly but simply one laying on top of another, this could cause misfires at higher rpm's when the voltage is aroung 40,000V! also check for any oil contamination on the wires. what year is it too does it have OBDI or OBDII?

Its a 96 firebird. It was doing it today on my way to work and then it stopped.. I did a almost WOT and it drove perfect. The wires are mds 8.5 super conductors and they are like 1 week old. On the passenger side the wires are all laying together, because I cant figure out a nice way to sort of loom the wires so they arent laying on eachother. But all the symptoms so far seem to be a failing opti. There isnt any oil contamination on the wires. Im actually pretty lost as to what it could be.

hmmm ya starting to sound like opti failure, are you throwing any misfire codes? the system should be OBDII which will log the cylinder thats misfiring and how many times it is ocouring. the system might also detect a problem in the opti if it is sensor related. if you can get the opti off and look for signs of carbon tracing(thin black lines that cause the spark to short) would be your problem.
