Do cynlinder heads normally survive a thrown rod?

Just as it says, if you throw a rod, do the heads normally survive intact (valves and all)? Also, not sure if the engine was oil-starved (I think it may have been)...would the heads be worthless then?

In more cases than not the heads would probably be fine, unless your case was similar to what StangSlayerSSs sounds like. I imagine when his rod broke the piston was on the upstroke and tagged an open valve or if the piston were broken debris could hit or fly in/past the valves and cause damage.

Last motor that let go took 9 valves & had to be welded in 3 spots. The crank also boke in 3 places, so bad stuff was happening all over & at the same time. Others have had zero damage, others some small dings. I've also seen the piston go thru the chamber, so every case is never the same.
