Exclamation Burning Oil And Popping

Alright long story, rebuilt my LT1, when I went back together I had the same problem another person on here was having my rocker arms wouldn't adjust in sequence, so I finally got them adjusted car starts with only a little help, seems to idle decent. It does pop a little while driving, only with a load on the engine and slowing down in gear. The big problem is that it is burning oil, it is perfectly fine under light accell, but when you get into it it smokes like a freight train. I have also noticed at times it feels like it is cutting out. I saw another post on here and saw that the timing chain is supposed to be installed with the dots up, and not dot to dot. I think I may have installed mine dot to dot. I did put new rings in, but I am wondering if I installed that cam wrong maybe it is fuel soaking the cylinder walls not allowing the rings to seat long enough to quit smoking. Just wondering what everyone else thinks about this. BTW it is a 96 lt1 camaro

my car is starting to smoke like a freight train too, even though the oil pressure is good...i haven't really had any lucky figuring it out yet...

What do you mean starts will a little help? Sounds like to me the valves are still not adjusted right, thats were the popping is comming from. As for the smoke, is it black, gray, white and for the oil sucking it may be the intake not seated right and its sucking oil in.

The car will start by itself, just takes a second to idle right. But, if you give it a little gas when you start it it will idle immediately. As far as the popping, I should clarify, it only pops on occassion, once every other time i drive it or so. I am curious about the intake thing though. When this first started happening I immediately thought rings, so i tore the engine down and put a set of rings in it, which i have done on other engines before, didn't have a problem with. However, this one didn't fix the problem, what I did notice also when I tore it down is that the intake gaskets were wet with oil like they weren't seated, so I did some checking and found out that the intake I had was actually for an LT4, don't know how I got that by mistake, so I bought a brand new LT1 intake from edelbrock to use, installed it, by the way the heads are brand new AFR heads, so it shouldn't be a mill issue, anyways put it back together and I still have the same problem. That is why I think it has to be a ring issue, unless you think I might still be having a intake seal problem, I used GM intake gaskets, and brand new intake and heads, I assumed this eliminated that problem. Let me know what ya'll think, this problem is annoying to say the least... thanks.

I am possibly attributing the occasional pop and start up to the plugs, they are oil fouled now, because it is using oil...

I am thinking about pulling the heads off in the car, and putting the factory heads back on it to see what happens... what do ya'll think about that idea.

Sounds like a valvetrain problem like someone above posted,i don't think swapping the heads will do anygood. What are your valvetrain mods?

That may be an issue as well...anyone able to clarify proper timing chain install?

I have 1.6:1 comp cam magnum tip roller rockers on it. I just can't figure out where the heck all the oil is going, I think if i could stop that the rest would be ok..

Well, if its black smoke thats normal, as for the timming dots 12 and 6 or 12 and 12 it does not matter cause the opti will go on one way. As for the little help it sounds like its running rich, mine is the same way, cause of the XFI486 comp cam it does it very seldom. How many miles you have on the engine after the rebuild.Do you have any blow-by (rings not seated)or can you feel any vacuum coming from the valve covers( indicating a intake leak).

I had that problem, car smoking sometimes, no knocking, seemed like the rings were bad. I decided to do a headgasket job and pulled a head and could see all the way through my number 8 cylinder. I was missing about half of my piston, it welded itself to the cylinder and part of the head.. And I thought it was just my rings.

I friend of mine had his trans am shooting black smoke out the exhaust everytime he got on it. He had a bad o2 sensor and after he replaced it, it ran perfect. Just an ide.a though
