Default LS1 Driveshaft swap

I've been thinking about doin this for a while, but lately my high speed vibration has gotten worse and worse. I was wondering if you have to get a transmission specific shaft (auto/manual), and if i can use the same u joints from my stock one since i recently replaced them. How much do these normally run and do i need to get a used one balanced? Just wondering but exactly how much lighter are they?

I did the swap, and all the vibration at high speed went away. Car pulls harder to me since I put the LS1 drive shaft in. Also droped my RPM's by 200 at 75 mph. All the drive shafts are the same, mine came out of a M6 car and mine is A4. And yes you can use your u joints. I got mine free from a friend that for some reason was collecting them, long story...but you can find them for 75-150. I wouldn't think it would need balancing unless you notice some damage on it.

You can get any ls1 driveshaft and it will work and your U-joints will work if you wanna put them in. I got mine for 100 bucks and all ls1 driveshafts are already balanced. The aluminum one will be lighter and I suggest that over the steel ls1 driveshaft. All m6 came w/ aluminum and all autos w/ 3.23 came w/ aluminum while 2.73 autos came w/ steel. Remember dropping lbs of rotational mass make even more of a difference something like ever 1 lb of rotational mass is like dropping 10 lbs regularly.

Shouldn't have driveshaft wont change your rpm since its just a direct link from your tranny to your rear. I think either your guages are off or it's in your head because it shouldnt drop your rpm

What changes when you set it up for a 12bolt? Can you still use it for the stock 10bolt with no modifications?

I have one of the aluminum LS1 shafts on the way. When it gets here its getting new ujoints and will be balanced...sending it through the mail has to throw off the balance.

I'll keep the steel shaft handy though incase the aluminum one gives

I tried installing a buddies aluminum DS out of his '01 Z28 and his Ujoint did not fit in my stock rear end. I then tried to use my Ujoint from the old steel DS and the inner and outer diameters were different.

Am I missing something? I thought, from everything I've read here, that it's a direct swap..my car is stock but maybe, my buddies had a different rear end in his. Which Ujoint do I need for it to work? Any help is GREATLY appreciated!

Also, Happy Thanksgiving to all!!

It didn't. The ujoint did not fit in my stock rear end grooves. I messed with it for about 20 mins as did my mechanic partner.. Which ujoint do I need to order for it to work?

i hope you were joking about this. why would shipping it in a box effect its balance?

Default ls1 driveshaft

[QUOTE=Stroked96Bowtie;8116159]I have one of the aluminum LS1 shafts on the way. When it gets here its getting new ujoints and will be balanced...sending it through the mail has to throw off the balance.

I'm guessing he was talking about the shipping company probably dropping it or laying something heavy on top of it etc. But like someone said earlier a visually inspection could possibly point out any obvious defects.

P.S. sorry for the hijacked thread.

Whoever had the driveshaft before you may have had a 12 bolt which uses a slightly bigger ujoint. Just go out and get a stock replacement style ujoint and put it in.

I had this problem when I bought mine used from someone.

maybe, but you would have to drop a driveshaft pretty darn hard to get it out of balance. think of the abuse it takes in the car. short of actually bending it or knocking a weight off it seams near impossible

i think it is in the neighborhood of 5-8 lbs of reciprocating mass.
i knew i would feel a difference since i did all my Tpi cars back in the day this car would not be any different.the car seems to accelerate much smoother, besides it cost me nothing

LS1 driveshafts and 12 bolt's aren't a good idea. LS1 driveshafts are pretty weak so chances are you will shread it on a hard launch.
