Hey, i am in the process of building a 396 stroker and i have been looking for an oil pump drive retainer that is made of metal instead of plastic. Ive searched and can't find much. Any help would be appreciated!

hey, i just want to make sure, but that part number is for the dummy distributor, right? Thats what i am looking for. On mine, the part that holds it in is plastic and ive heard that a HV oil pump will eat that plastic up.

No. The melling oil pump driveshaft is what mates between the dummy distributor shaft and the oil pump -- the benefit being that you get rid of that crap plastic coupler near the pump (replaced by a metal collar).

It seems I remember some place selling metal tabs for the top of that dummy distributor shaft. I simply made a metal retainer plate out of steel from the hardware store, slipped it over the plastic piece, and used a longer bolt. Wish I had a photo...

M$ Paint? lol I'm curious what you're referring too.

I know about the little metal piece between the oil pump and distributor, I just haven't torn down an LT1

GM did some odd things in their span of SBC. Plastic toothed timing gears, that plastic oil pump collar... But, I guess a blown motor is good income lol

The oil pump drives are no different between LT1s with a dummy distributor and SBCs with a real one.

Haha. Sorry, I'm looking, but I seem to be missing some photos on this computer.

I basically just traced the top plastic piece onto a strip of (1/8"?) steel, and welded on tabs to keep it centered onto the plastic piece. I think I also used an old 1/2"-tall metal washer to fit down into the circular opening of the dummy distributor shaft, and welded that to the bracket as well. Drill a hole for the bolt, and you're in business. There's no way for the dummy distributor shaft to lift out of its bore, even if the plastic tab breaks, which it wont since it's braced.

---------------------
To the OP, here's what the Melling IS-55E metal oil pump driveshaft looks like (which is apparently not what you were looking for). Top is stock. Left sides attach to the oil pump, right sides attach to the dummy distributor shaft.

msd makes it, but it only mounts through your intake. so your intake would have to be machined.

Melling said not to use that one even thought it came with my pump. They told me to run the 12550. I couldn't find it at summit so I just bought the APR one.

Guys, read the thread.

It doesn't sound like he's looking for the oil pump driveshaft. He's looking for a replacement dummy distributor shaft (in the lifter valley) with a metal retainer instead of plastic. IE, this:

It turns out it was MorePerformanceInc that used to sell a steel retainer for this purpose. However, I recall they went out of business years ago.

Interesting. Looks like the difference between the 12550 and the IS-55E is that the 12550 is made of chrome-moly. The IS-55E must be weaker, though I've run it for years without any issues.

Yes, that is correct. I am looking for the replacement dummy distributor shaft in the lifter valley. So no one is making one anymore? I figured there would be someone out there that was making one!

Those are around $50? brand new from GM dealership.
I use a large washer to reinforce the plastic tab, (just in case the motor rattles-detonates-pre ignition).
Alex94TAGT fabricated his own custom reinforcement as mentioned already in the thread. Looks like a good peace-of-mind modification.

All of those ideas about a washer/metal tab/etc are nice, but I had the same concerns with my motor. The stub shaft tends to break at the edge of the attachment hole. A washer helps some, but I guess no one makes an entire replacement metal stub shaft.

Anyone have issues with the stub shaft on solid roller motors?

No, it is NOT the oil pump drive extension shaft being talked about here!
