Default Voltage Issue

Well I have a 94 Z28 with a rebuilt engine, tranny and rearend. Well I am throwing a code 53 which mean system voltage is to high.

I have a brand new 140 alternator with a new battery and starter but it still throws this code. However it seems to come and go as the service engine soon light will go off and on at times but mostly stays on.

Any idea what could cause a high voltage problem?

internal regulator in new alternator could be DOA. Remove alt and have it tested at autostore

Have you measured the voltage? 13.8 should be about the max. I had a 86 forebird that poput out a consistant 16.? That kept burning out the alt. It turned out that the small wire on the starter relay was coroded inside the insulation, causing high resistance and the result was high charging voltage. Once I cut out that section and installed a new piece of similar wire, charging voltage was back to normal.

14.8 IIRC is the max voltage on an LT1 charging system.

And I thought 14.2 was the avg "good" voltage to be churning out.

my system puts out 14.55 volts while running. perfectly normal.

Well the issue we are having is that it seems to come and go. The SES light is on then it will go off, then back on again and the only code is the high voltage code.

Went and had the alt. tested while on the car and tested out fine. So a new/tested alt, new battery, cleaned grounds so I am stumped right now.
