I am hearing a sound coming from the driver side of my intake manifold. I am not sure if it is a knock or a tap. It is definately in the top end and consistent with engine RPM. I can't think of anything else that it could be. My question is does this sound like a collapsed lifter??

 

Could be. I just had the same problem with my car. In my case it was a bad lifter. Could also be a misadjusted rocker.

 

I would pull the valve covers and look around, see if anything looks out of place. I've had one of the stock rocker arms break on me..... as well as a few pushrods (but those were my fault).

 

I already pulled the covers. I did not see anything out of place. I guess I should readjust the rockers and see if the sound is still there.

 

I have heard a LOT of noises blamed on lifters over the years and have yet too see one fail in person other than a guy who mixed up flat tappets on a roundy round car.

If you find a failed lifter I suggest you carefully critque your rocker adjustment procedure, a huge number of folks get this wrong for the first few years they play.

It is always possible you just got a flakey part too.

 

Mine was a bad part. Older Comp R.

 

A little off-subject, but i thought i heard you're supposed to adjust your rockers differently for the comp r's. True?

 

Yes. They're very sensitive to preload.

 

Well im gunna readjust tomorrow just for ***** and giggles... got the specs for type r adjustment?

 

I am doing mine tomorrow also. I tightened a few that were loose. and it made no difference so tomorrow I will do all of them.

 

Ok so today I re adjusted my valves and it made no difference. I have had a couple of people look at it. One my father who was a mechanic for 35 years. And a couple of his friends who are experienced with cars. One said he thinks its a lifter and the other two said it sounds more like a knock than a tap. Like metal to metal, they said it doesnt sound like a lifter. Its definately in the top of the motor. Sounds like its coming from the driver side. Its difficult to hear at idle but when I bring the RPMs up to about 2000 its very loud. Anyone have any ideas?

 

See if you can find a long screwdriver and scope the valve covers with it.By that i mean to place the screwdriver at each rocker and put your ear on the end of the handle.This process works better if you pull the valve covers but, it makes a little mess.I'll let you decide.That should determine if there is a rocker or valvetrain fault here.If you do pull the valve cover make sure you put the screw driver on the rocker stud otherwise it might not feel to good on you ear.

 

The ticking sound will be amplified by the screwdriver.It should be very obvious which one is the problem.

 

I used a stethoscope on it and I have determined that it is coming from the back driver side. I unplugged all the plug wires on that side one by one and none made a diffenerence. Maybe I will try that.

 

I had a ticking noise I thought was lifter noise came to find out the cam had a bad lobe on it.

 

i have the same problem with mine, i thought it was an exhaust leak but it started before my longtubes project. what would be the best idea to fix it? new lifters on an old cam?

 

I have the same noise, loudest between 2k and 3k. It started after about 500 miles were on the new 383. I tracked it to the back drivers side as well. Sounds like a rod almost but it's too high up and it has very distinct metal to metal tick sound. After reading this thread I am leaning toward a bad lifter or cam lobe. Anyway, I am tearing down my engine this week so if I find something I will pass it along.

 

could it also sound like an exhaust leak? is the ticking from a bad lifter generally the same sound as an exhaust leak?
