Default Wheel Stud Install

I removed the old wheel studs and brakes off of my 94' TA and I can't get the new wheel studs (arp) in.The only thing I didn't remove is the backing plate. Anyone have any tips??don't want to remove axles if I don't have to.

Not sure with stock axles and rearend, it's been a while since I worked on one.

But the one thing I will recommend is you press or atleast hammer them on and not pull them on with the lug nuts. You will put wayyyy more torque on them than you ever should and this can lead to possible failure down the line.

This is coming from someone who had his rear passenger side lug nuts shear off while going 60+ on the street. I won't ever "pull" them on again.

the problem is that the new ARP 100-7708 wheel studs don't fit.I guess there's not enough space between the backing plate and axle.Has anyone installed arp studs on a stock rear without removing the axles???

Did you try putting the studs in the freezer for a couple of hours? The cold will shrink the studs a little bit and that would help the install. Or is there a different problem that i missed that your talking about?

With them being longer like that, it looks like you might have to pull the axles.

I was able to loosen the backing plates and wiggle them around just enough to get the studs in.

I was thinking the same thing, pull the backing plates and try to get them in there.

They were the arp studs. It's really better to pull the axles and have them pressed in. I pulled mine in with a impact wrench, and now some of the threads are not in very great shape. I'm thinking about ordering another set and doing it right.

yep ive done the 3.25 ARP studs just like your pictures. its impossible to do it with out pulling the axle out. unless you have 4 channel abs, my guess you have the 3 channel system. Those studs are way too long to push threw, get your self pos additive, diff fluid, and gasket then take diff cover off remove C-clip slide the axle out. by the way those ARP studs dont go in easy, youll have to hit them hard to get them seated or do it right way and press them in.

No it's not impossible to do it without pulling the axle on a three channel. I just did it a couple of weeks ago. If the backing plate is loose, you can manipulate it until you find the one sweet spot where the stud will go in. It's still tight, but it worked for me on both sides of my car.

installing the stud is much easyer with the axle out, instead of having to deal with the limited space. hiting that stud can damage the stud it self, i recommend removing axle. but ya your right with backing plate loose probly be able to do the job.

I GOT THEM IN! I grinded a bit on the backing plates and the new studs slid right in,then i used 6 washers and a lug nut to pull the stud thru.Grinded for about 5 minutes on the backing plate and took me about 15 minutes to pull all 5 of the new studs. Not bad for my first stud removal/install.

Thanks to everyone who posted and a big thanks to transamws6 97 for posting those vids...they helped alot especially on stopping the axle from turning.

ee , those thread on the arp studs will become weak if you pull them with a lug nut. i hope it didnt damage the thread. Congrats on the swap though!
