Default wierd.. very wierd

i was at the mall on saturday and crawling through the parking lot the engine just stalled (wasnt me) and the SES came on. i heard the fans on high so i knew it kicked into SD mode cause my MAF wires are extended since i have a lid. now since then every cold start will crank 5 times or so and fire really slowly and the exhaust smells of raw gas. no codes are thrown and the car runs great. anyone have an idea of the cold start problem?

damnit

its most likely your OPTI....... I remember my car died, then it would take 4-6 to start and even though it was running great I knew I was fucked.. I replaced it and everything was great after that..

i have a bad plug wire that i know of. im thinking its that causing it.

ok seems like the car runs way better on SD so im gonna spray the MAF with electrical parts cleaner.

also, it seems like this loud *** "backfire" in the exhaust comes at 3500rpm in 3rd,4th gear. but yesterday i did a little burnout and it revved all the way flawlessly 1st-3rd.

the way it feels is at that RPM ONLY under load, even gradually going up to it, itll pull then feel like its engine braking and sound like it then BOOM! then what sounds like pieces of something hitting under the car and itll go back to normal right after that big bang.

the opti barely has maybe 10,000 miles on it. and has never seen water except a few times i drove in the rain. i have a heat cracked dryed out plug wire for cylinder 4, so maybe thats causing it. i electrical taped it for now and put the heat sleeve back on it.

I vote that you at least change the one plug wire that is bad to see if it clears up, then if that fails check the whole ignition system, all spark plug wires, opti, coil, etc.

thing is, its the over the valve cover wires so its basically idiot proof to not burn them. they are away from the primaries but yet this one got burned.

So what was the fix? I have a 93 Firebird with the same horrible backfire, rattling problem. New opti, plugs, wires, coil. still does it.

well my fuel pump died, so i guess it couldnt hide any longer. i had spark, i pulled the #1 wire and ached it to a screwdriver. i barely had fuel dribbling out the schrader valve with the key on today and it wouldnt start.

check your fuel pressure regulator. the vacuum line could be sucking in gas causing the backfire. it did it to me right before this fuel pump problem.
